I have done the ipconfig/all, this is the relevant data obtained.

    Dhcp enabled ... Yes

    Autoconfiguration Enabled ... Yes

    IPv4 Address ... 192.168.1.2<preferred>

    Subnet Mask ... 255.255.255.0

    Default Gateway ... 192.168.1.1

    DHCP Server ... 192.168.1.1

    DNS Server ... 192.168.1.1

I have checked the 220v router and it does say that it is for ADSL use.

Many Thanks for everyones help so far - Much appreciated.

When connected, try entering http://209.85.129.99/ into your browser, to see if it is a DNS problem.

If expresso's test doesn't work, also try ping 209.85.129.99

The ipconfig above looks ok, suggesting that you are talking to the router ok, so the next step is to check the router is talking to the internet ok, by going into the router config, and checking the settings

    http://192.168.1.1

Are you using a software firewall?
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

    .

This is still 'bugging' me.........looking at:

    http://www.shop.bt.com/invt/car116

    It states
This product is designed for BT Business Broadband only and will not work with any other broadband service. ex VAT price £68.08

It also says it is ADSL, but there must be a reason why they state this?
It just seems that the router wont talk to net..........i am suprised Bt cant sort as they are usually quite good.

Strange. Perhaps the BT Business BB uses a different realm or something that is stored in the router settings.

    Hi,

Annoyingly I will be working away from home until Friday.

I will be unable to access the laptop until then.

I will try tests mention by espresso #53, and Albertross #54 a.s.a.p.

Prior to leaving today I phoned BT UK and requested an engineer attend as I have spent several hours onto the Indian call centre with no joy.

They have agreed to send someone out to check my setup, on the condition that, should it be MY Fault, I will be billed for the call out and time spent on the job.

As the Indian call centre would not log a line fault, this is my only option.

The final straw was spending four hours onto them on Saturday to no avail.

I hope it is the router being unable to connect with the internet and I hope that BT cannot see this as MY FAULT.

Thank You All for your help.

I will post an update when possible.

This is going to sound odd, but is your laptop connected to the mains power supply when you are connecting to the router?

Dell laptops by default switch off the network card to conserve the battery when not using the mains power.

    Sorted At Last. I Hope.

Arranged to meet BT engineer Friday afternoon.

Brilliant Guy. Checked line which appeared ok to carry broadband signal.

Said that 220v router was adsl, correct one for the job, and seemed ok.

I was worried at this point!

He then tried to connect to the internet and could not, diagnosed a fault at my local telephone exchange.

Left to repair it, then returned an hour later, had tested a broadband connection 'card' in the exchange that was faulty.

Since then everything seems to be working ok and I am now using my dell.

Thanks for ALL YOUR HELP and ADVICE once again.

One thing that is annoying me is that a screen called Toolbar EULA appears at startup and wont go away? No right click available to delete and no delete option on the page either, seems to be part of the startup process and I would love to get rid of it. Should anyone know how?? Have just dragged it off the screen for the moment.

    Cheers,
    dog1.
