May be that you need to get DNS settings from BT and manually input them, and another long phonecall involved? When you rest router was it a full reset or just on/off?

Done full resets, holding paperclip for 15 seconds etc, whilst on to BT call centre, somewhere in INDIA I expect. Language barrier a HUGE problem too.

Must seem obvious questions, but have you turned the firewall off taht you do have and tried browsing then?

I have what came with the dell package, all be it I removed the McAfee stuff, so I only have windows defender firewall (vista).

During my time on to the call centre this was disabled and still no joy.
At one point I pressed a diagnose the problem option and it came back that my firewall was correctly set but.... a remote? firewall could be blocking the broadband signal.

I do not understand what a remote firewall is or how to rectify this?

Pin the cmd icon to the start menu, then right click on it and run as admin, then do

This might work without being admin, so you could try it normally first.

ipconfig /all and post the results.

If you have a usb key you could do

    ipconfig /all >c:\1.txt

then copy and paste the contents here

Does the PC you are working on have a network card, if so, could you plug it into the router, to see if you can configure it?
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

Sorry, I am now way out of my depth.

I will find someone more capable than myself to try this later.

Thanks for all your help and advice.

you need to be able to get to the point of pinging google before IE will work.

    ipconfig /all | more

will give an indication of what your ip setup is, in particular, your dns server (which should normally be the router ip address)

Has the phone lead been plugged into your router and adsl filter while doing these (ping https://www.google.com) checks?

I should have done that long ago.
I am going to a friends tonight and I intend to take the laptop and see if they can use it to sign into their bt broadband.
Only problem is I'm sure they have an older, smaller, router with usb and only the two lights.

    Time will tell.

    Thanks.

it does say with this router that it is for BT Business broadband only.......is this what you have? and does that mean it wont work on 'normal' bt broadband?

    Hi,

I am not a BT Business customer.

The router arrived on 15/6/07, also says "Simple - fast set up, no need for an engineer" on the front of the box.

Back on the phone last night again have been told to contact dell system manager as notebook brouser settings may be blocking the signal?

Searched dell web and don't have a Service tag number.

Loathed to phone their 0870 number!

Think my 90day warranty may be just out as despatch date on invoice is 26/3/2007.

Spent the last 10 days just trying to connect and BT cannot? send out an engineer as they will not log the line as faulty?

    Total nightmare.
