The Dell Tag number is usually printed on the back or bottom of the computer. You can check your warranty status online at the Dell site.0

Re Browser setting. Is this laptop used at work? Perhaps you have it set to use a proxy server?
For XP:
In Control Panel->Internet Options->Connections, "Never dial a connection" should be selected and in
Control Panel->Internet Options->Connections->LAN settings, "Automatically detect settings", "Use automatic configuration script" and "Use a proxy server..." should be unticked.0 -

Thanks, Laptop is not used at work, infact has not been used on line at all.
If I get it running it will be for home use only. It has Vista home basic installed.
Got it at end of March, in the dell offer I found here, and only attempted to use it on 15/6/07 on receiving my BT router.
I live in an area where broadband is new, miles from an exchange and I believe that the signal may well be too weak.
BT allowed me to sign up and pay for this service but I don't think it is available hereand try as I might they are not prepared to send a broadband engineer out to test it as they are "thin on the ground" at the moment.
I am able to use this old pc at the moment on dial up, but can't get broadband, and can't convince the Indian? call centre that I suspect the service is unavailable to me in my area. So, they won't log a line fault and I won't see an engineer.
I may just stick with dial up in the end, but it would be nice to have the situation confirmed by BT.0 -

Your post makes no sense because in post #20 you told us that your router was connected. The router screen will refresh every few seconds and that is normal.
You really need to post the results of the ipconfig /all as previously explained, in order to proceed. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
I dont know if i am confusing issues etc, but when you look up your router on the bt shop it says its for business broadband as i previously posted.......on further checking, business broadband uses SDSL and not ADSL, so could the router settings be causing all probs.......have you access to another router?0

The router manager sometimes says that I am connected, however, it also says that I can surf the internet, which is not the case.
I am interested in the info that the 220v is a business router and that it may not be compatible to my private BT broadband!
Is anyone out there using the 220v on a private connection?
I have done an ipconfig/all which returns loads of data.
As I will be typing it from my laptop screen onto my pc, is there any specific parts that I should post, or is it all needed?
Please also confirm that the ethernet is to be connected and router switched on prior to doing the ipconfig/all?
I know very little about this and the basic simple things to you, might not be to myself.
Thanks.0 -

I only have the one router that they sent me.
I have no idea whether this could be the problem but perhaps someone does?

You could try ringing BT broadband SALES as at least they will be a Uk based operation...........or if you do get through to Indian call centre on technical again, insist they put you through to uk office?0

The router needs to be connected to the PC, and also to the phone line.
These are the important bits.
Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes
Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.x.x
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.x.x
DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.x.x
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.x.x
if you have a floppy disk or usb key available, you could transfer the 1.txt from one pc to another and post the lot easily.
if you don't get a 192.168 ip address, do an
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
first.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0
