  • PROOF!

It costs MORE to feed either of my cats than it does my dog ......

(you know when you start to think about these things and just HAVE to work it out properly:o)

    MAISIE
    Dog_zpsf682994b.jpg

    MIA
    Mia_zpse4feea30.jpg

    ARCHIE
    Archie_zpsa5b50686.jpg

Now ..... Maisie has a high quality wet meat (60%+ meat) no cereals etc (as she's intolerant) and it costs about £23 / month to feed her ....... Mia eats mostly good quality (60%+ meat) no cereals etc but still likes her Sheba in the mornings and she costs about £25.50* / month - this would be about the same if she had the high quality wet in the morning as well ....... Archie - who is the junk food addict in the family, eats a poor diet compared to the other 2 and gets dry as well as his wet - and costs the most at over £29.50* / month!

*Mia gets a small amount of Royal Canin Calm morning & night as it's got a mood stabiliser in it! Archie has free access to it - I'm thinking it will work out about £8 month / between them - so if you add another £4 each onto them

I've not incl it just now as recently switched to that from a supplement that went in their food - that was even more expensive!

Now - Maisie is 32kg .... Archie is less than 1/6th of that & Mia not much more mmmmmm

Cat owners are being totally ripped off it seems to me!

    Totally ridiculous!

    jeepers

I'll stop grumbling at my two mogs now! They get Applaws chicken kibble in the morning (bought via Z00plu5 and last time 9.5 kg for about £33, they get through about 75g a day) and a can of Butchers between them in the evening (about 46p a can, and just the meat flavours in rotation, as the fish ones honk so badly I won't have them in the house :rotfl:). That's about the cheapest decent quality cereal free options I have found - I did buy Boz1ta for a while but it's still mixed meat proteins so I don't feel the quality justifies double the cost.

    *sigh* big green face here!

I've tried good dry foods for Archie (eg Applaws!) and he won't touch them either!!

Both him & Mia ate Porta21 for a while so if you're after an alternative at any time, it's great - grain free, good meat content & really good value for the 10kg bags (ignore the RRP that's listed, I've never seen it for more than £29! - another Zoo+ being a bit sly with their offers!)

Mia's off dry (except for her wee bit of 'calm' stuff) as I'm still struggling to shift the weight off her

On the matter of Zoo+ - I do hope you have your loyalty discount in place?

    Hi Rising

Yes, loyalty discount all sorted :D - and the mogs did have the P0rta21 for a while, but they weren't as keen on that as the Applaws and it didn't seem as nice to me either, so went to back to Applaws. It's cheap enough to be doable via Zoo+ but I don't think they'd be getting it at the P@H prices! (and if I do have to cut the budget down, that would be the first option).

I can see what you mean about them gaining weight on the dry food - I was giving them more of that and less of the canned as for a while I seemed to be binning leftovers from the wet food, but big mog was getting tubby and whining for the wet food so have gone back to giving them that in the evenings. They are only getting dry first thing because I am not co-ordinated enough to deal with cans before my own breakfast :rotfl:

  • oh my, there just aren't enough hours in a day atm! :o

Well, I've taken the plunge and switched Maisie to an Accident & Injury Pet policy

The new policy is about £18.50 / month cheaper so have set up a SO to transfer £20 to their savings account on the day her old premium came out my account (on top of the amount that goes across weekly!)

She just has so many exclusions (ears, allergies / itching, colitis / tummy, UTI / kidney, anal glands, fevers etc) that it's just a bit ... you know.

I've also (fingers crossed) found a new kibble that should suit her - again this is really hard & restricted as she's so many food intolerances.

Anyway, current food is £30 (delivered) for 12kg which works out at £2.50kg - and is never on offer! (small supplier)

New food is £23 for 15kg but is often on offer and have 2 bags coming for £39 (delivered) which is £1.30kg :money:

Quality looks similar and fish content actually higher so .... fingers crossed it suits her! (I'll have paid for mum's dog to be fed for months otherwise!)

  • Hi Rising

Just in case... did you see there's TCB cashback on Zoo+?

Also, have you considered raw feeding Maisie? It's a bit of a PITA to get set up but you can batch prep and freeze it. Not sure how cheap it works out.

I use Quidco which also gives cshback for zoo+:D must look at topcashback though as the rates via QC have reduced over the past year :(

Raw feeding - mmmmm tbh I'd not be able to cope with it :o

Having 2 autoimmune diseases and taking immunosuppressive drugs leaves me a bit vulnerable to things - and especially stuff like salmonella which would make a healthy person unwell, would make me really Ill so I'd not risk it

Id really struggle to get her a balanced diet anyway as she can only have chicken and fish meat wise and many dogs don't seem to tolereate raw fish well

Cost wise - I think it depends how you do it - I know someone who feeds 3 Labs for about £20/month :T but does know game keepers and gets leftover stock from local butchers / fishmongers

You can get prepared raw which has everything needed to ensure a balanced diet but these are pretty expensive (so generally people might use em until they're confident to 'do it themselves')

Anyway fingers crossed the new food suits her

Wish I could cut the cats food bill a bit ;)
