    Thanks Mini Cooper,

I've been fighting this debt war for years unfortunately but this time I'm determined to make a long lasting difference. I've set up extra payments for the next twelve months through online banking so that I only change the plan if we have an emergency rather than waiting to see if there's anything left over....there never is! I'm also going through the freezer and doing some batch cooking to see if I can cut back on our food order. I used to be so good at budgeting but this year has been so busy that I just haven't bothered which in reality means I've wasted a full years worth of payments on the cc because the balance hasn't actually moved at all :(

It's been a relief to be honest that people have started threads indicating that they have also had a financial yoyo battle as it's easy to feel that you're the only one losing the battle!

    Good luck everyone x

It's never a year wasted - look at it this way, while your debts didn't go down, they didn't go up either :) I have a second bank account that I transfer a monthly allowance into. I use this for my day-to-day spends (food, fuel etc), and that helps me keep within my budget. It means I always have a little bit of money in my main account in case of a large bill, but I can't accidentily spend it (though I invariably borrow £20 from it a couple of times a month :rotfl:)

rubywhatashmoo I agree with you - especially cheques! The New Year break means my monthly l budget won't transfer until Friday either, so I'm clinging to my last £40 for as long as possible!

Just paid off catalogue #2! :D I don't know whether to close the account or keep it open though - what do you guys think?

    Declaring new total:

    #11: £243 / £6,000
  • Thanks for the words of encouragement guys!

amr546 It depends on the interest some are just under 40% apr and others (from the same parent company) are under 10%. Would you be tempted to treat yourself to the odd piece of clothing etc or would it just be there as an abosolute emergency for say if your washer blew up?

ARGH! I can't believe it - went to pick my daughter up from Manchester last night and the alternator went on my car, we literally crawled home in second gear with all the electrics going crazy, lights flashing and lots of warning bleeps going on! Guess January will be harder than I thought! Our first test of the year and we're still in the old one yet!
  • Penny2myName - I'm in awe of you trying to live on £4000 for the year! I hope that's after bill and rent... You're number 33

Its after rent and council tax, and had to revise my figures to £5k, may have managed £4k in 2009 but even I have to cave in to inflation. After all my 11p tin of beans are now 24p

  • Thanks for the thread!

Can you put me down for £15500 please?

I think it will be a tall order, and I'd need to find an extra £600-700 a month or so to pay it all off, but I can always aim high, and it'll be nice to see it coming down over the year.

Anyway, I've made a few payments today, so...

    333/15500 = 2.1%

Good luck everyone, and here's hoping 2014 will become a debt-free year for a lot of us! :j

re catalogue, i think i'd like it for in case any large appliances go boom but hmm...

just had an unnecessary expense- someones hit my car and smashed my number plate to bits :( the car body work looks ok but ive not checked it thoroughly. tyre was shoved into the pavement from the force of it so im a bit worried it could be damaged or something. off to the garage soon...! didn't see who it was - it happened any time from yesterday afternoon to this morning - although i have a suspicion it cuold be the BMW that is always parking like 1cm from my front!
  • judi24 welcome to the challenge - you're number 059

blissfullydebtfreewannabe give it your best and it might just surprise you! You're #060

ItsOver I've had a kickboxing class if you need help kicking :D You're #061

Oh dear, I hope car troubles aren't going to come in threes... sharonej that's unfortunate! Alternator sounds rather expensive... I hope it's easy to fix!

amr it's awful someone could just drive off from that! It sounds like they hit you going a bit fast, as normally lightly tapping the bumper is not a problem at all. When the BMW turns up next time, check for paint transfer.

Penny2myname that's shocking inflation! I'm glad it's after rent though - as a student, I lived off of £3500 after rent, but I had no real expenses for getting to uni or anything, it was just about manageable, but I don't think I could do it now I have to look respectable :o
