It's very nice here if you are a child or quite old. You wouldn't want to be in your 20s or 30s here though.0

I loved living in Manchester in my 20s, in the early 80's. Don't think I'd enjoy it as much now.0

London, Glasgow, Edinburgh, maybe Manchester or a town on their edges. Loads to do, housing big and not too pricey and big city feel (except London).
Countryside? Nope. There's a good reason it's empty. There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0 -
You know, I've lived in England for more than 20 years, and I can say- I hate England. I have online business so I can afford to live where I want, so I've chosen Lithuania, not only because of low prices and high culture, but also because of the low criminality, just look, how low it is- kurgyvenu.lt/Kaunas, if you are not attached to England, take this opportunity into consideration !0

Surrey, south east Surrey to be exact.
I'm the side of Surrey furthest from London.
So its there if you want it, but far enough away too.
Halfway between London & the coast, so the coast is only a short drive away.
In a small village (handful of shops - literally - & no fast food outlets) a couple of miles from a small town :-) with a Waitrose :-) :-)
An airport handy, ports not too far away.
M25 & M23 handy enough.
Crawley within easy reach for cinemas, restaurants, shopping, etc.
Bluewater & Brighton not too far.
Heaven & I'm staying put!!!
It is funny how people can have such different perspectives. I have lived in SE Surrey in a little village for a couple of years and really want to move away. House prices are so expensive it is hard to afford anything decent. Prices of everything are overpriced especially trades people who have to cover their own horrendous mortgages. Despite being only 20 miles from London train services are rubbish (1 hour to cover 20 miles) and very slow and often cancelled. Parking at the stations is non existent if you don't arrive before 7am. Local towns are really busy and a nightmare to park. I have found people a lot less friendly than where I used to live and the roads are over-run with cyclists in lycra who think they own the roads and deliberately try to stop car drivers overtaking. It is wasn't for my husbands job I would move back to Cambridge where we used to live or to Devon to be near my family.0 -

I know what you mean about transport, it would be a miserable place to live without your own transport, public transport is scarce, there are no Sunday or evening buses through my village, no train station within walking distance. But none of that affects me.
Yes everything is bloody expensive, apart from property London is cheaper for everything. Meals out, takeaways, beauty treatments, hairdressing, trades, everything.
I think it's worth the little extra expense for the wonderful location of beautiful countryside, the coast & capital only a small jaunt away.
PS - yes the cyclists are a PIA & lately the horse riding brigade seem to think rush hour is the best time to take the horses out.0
