OP
Every year I have always cooked a fresh turkey(even though I do not eat it myself).
Left it until Christmas eve to get one and ended up not being able to go out because we were flooded in.
I had a stuffed turkey crown bought last Christmas from M&S(reduced) in the freezer so cooked that.
Everyone said it was the best turkey they had ever tasted!!
It was so easy to cook as well so that is what I shall always be doing from now on.0 -
I am sure the op was disappointed and annoyed, I expect most of us would be under those circumstances, but she did have lots of other options. I think it was the use of the "emotionally unable" to cook a different type of Turkey that raised the bar from a mere irritation to something she had perhaps blown out of proportion.
In the scheme of things (and I expect we could all think of people who are enduring far worse at Christmas) it is not such a big deal. I think a lot of the posts were designed to show her that.0 -
Maybe the posters agreeing with the OP are those people who obsess about Christmas and micro-plan every last detail so that every tiny little aspect of 'THE BIG DAY' will be perfect and they understand how the OP feels as that's how they would react to a hitch in said plan.....
And maybe the posters who think there's been an over-reaction here are people who are more laid back and can take a deviation from 'the plan' in their stride without saying 'Christmas was ruined because......'
And maybe the posters who neither agree nor disagree particularly ( they are the most laid back if it's a competition) fit into a third category-those who think there was a pack mentality.which is the point that's being made.0 -

Perhaps she used the word emotionally Ill advisedly, but it was the progress of the thread that was out of proportion too.0 -

I might not agree with the OP but it does not stop me from understanding how they might be feeling. This does not automatically make me one of those people who micro-plan 'The Big day' because I do not.
I just happen to agree that the ridicule the Op has received is over the top but that happens all the time on here.0 -
Annoying and frustrating yes, but just a goodwill gesture, not compensation would be appropriate.
As for turkey being difficult - it is really simple (I did one today); mine went something like:- Read the cooking instructions and time on the turkey's packaging.
- Pre-heat the oven to 210.
- Open the bag the turkey came in and put it onto a roasting dish.
- After an hour take it out of the oven and cover it with foil.
- Put it back in the oven for the remaining 2 hours.
- Take it out of the oven and let it rest a few minutes.
- Hack it to bits and serve it.
you forgot the bit about sticking your arm up the bird's botty and pulling out the plastic bag of giblets.
Personally I would have asked them to swap the proffered whole turkey for a lovely leg of lamb and a jar of mint sauce. Delicious and no need to worry about giblets.

Also no mention of basting and seasoning.
I would like the lamb but the family do like their turkey at Christmas.0 -

I prefer a goose at Christmas.
Lamb is what we're having tomorrow night with a few friends. Needs to go in the oven first thing in the morning.1. Have you tried to Google the answer?
2. If you were in the other person's shoes, how would you react?
3. Do you want a quick answer or better understanding?0 -
I'm actually going to stick up for the OP!
I would also have been more than annoyed and would not have wanted the whole turkey offered as an alternative because I also order the deboned bird. Three reasons:
1) - easier to carve
2) - shorter cooking time
3) (and the real reason) - oven space is limited and I can't fit a large bird and all the trays of roasties, stuffing, parsnips, pigs in blankets etc into the oven at the same time. With a whole bird there is only room for 2 shelves in the oven, but with the deboned one there is room for 3 shelves and I don't have to juggle taking hot trays and shelves out mid-roast to rearrange everything.
No, it isn't the end of the world, but when you are already dealing with a list as long as your arm of times to put things in the oven, take them out, remove foil, turn over, baste etc it just adds to the stress.0 -
Just as an answer to one of the replies. I have at no point said I agree or disagree with the OP.
To lighten this thread a little I recall my xmas dinner approx 30 years ago. I was about 9-10 years old. Mum had turkey in the oven and one of my more outspoken friends came round and as soon as he entered he said "Oh Mrs F, Something does not smell right" anyway my mother said oh I can't think what it is.....Anyway upon opening the kitchen door this smell got stronger - Mum said it cant be the turkey as it was bought just 3 days ago. Anyway it was very soon apparent that the turkey was indeed "off". Poor mum had prepared all the trimmings ect but litterally had no other backup for a main meal for 5. So guess what we had....Meatballs with all the trimmings. - Still a favorite family story until this very day.
So no I don't micro manage xmas......But I still stand by my comments. Maybe some posters are a little embarrassed about what they have posted and feel the need to defend themselves ect....but I think if any ordinary person took a step back and looked at this thread as well as a few others on this section over the last few days then surely they would see some pretty poor behavior.0
