  • what have you heard about Virgin planes? I'm guessing you've only heard a handful of bad stories, but none of the thousands of "it was fine" or "it was good" stories.

for what it's worth we've flown VA six times in the last 4-5 years (4 times to Vegas and never had a bad experience. The food's half decent, staff are excellent... drink has run out a couple of times, but what do you expect :)

and there's no accounting for 'idiots' you might get on board... but you can get those on any flight!

How about the seats? I need something comfortable. We don't really drink so that isn't an issue. I can't remember what else I read as it was years ago, I just remember choosing BA.
  • Seems a post I thought I wrote hasn't appeared. Just wanted to thank everyone for their suggestions, I will check them out.

Nothing is comfortable in economy for 10.5 hours.
I quite like AA flights, seats seam wider than BA/VS, staff are always quite friendly, but still you are in economy. We used to go via ORD or JFK, that way you get to get off and stretch your legs and get some decent food.
Also where you live might have a bearing. North of London and you are better choosing BA over VS, 1.5 hours less traveling.
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.

you only get comfortable seats by paying lots of money.

I have flown to LAS on BA,Virgin,Delta and KLM, they are all pretty much the same altough the upgraded Virgin fleet from Gatwick is prob the best of those 4

I always take a seat cushion with me which helps the pad the seat out a bit, and a good pair of noise cancelling headphones, drowns out the roar of the engines and lets me hear the IFE clearly.

those 2 things have helped make the trip to LAS a joy (almost)

    Honestly ?
I don't expect an airline not to be able to serve me a drink.
I'm not a big drinker so I don't feel the need to drink in the morning - but several hours into the flight a baileys or two can go down quite nicely.

I am an adult who can manage to fly and drink without making a nuisance of myself to other passengers . Other carriers don't have the same problems Virgin do - but that is because Virgin are well known for allowing people to board already drunk whereas the likes of Delta and AA would tell people in the same state to sling their hooks and refuse boarding. Yes any airline can get idiots - but Virgin's attitude of allowing drunks to board and then "nannying" the entire economy cabin by pretending to have run out rather than just cut off the ones who have overdone it is their own choice -and a practice that as a customer I don't appreciate.

As long as people just strug their shoulders and say "What do you expect" Virgin have no reason to change.

For more comfort Air New Zealand Sky Couch whilst more expensive than standard economy might be a better option Heathrow to LAX depending on how important cost over comfort actually is.

Leave for my annual pilgrimage tomorrow...getting excited!!!

Unfortunately going a bit of a roundabout way this time due to changing circumstances after booking initial flights. Flying to Houston tomorrow then to LA on Friday before starting my road trip via Phoenix/Grand Canyon/Zion. Then quick weekend trip to TX for the Formula 1 Grand Prix THEN flight to Oakland to take in Humbolt Co, Tahoe, Mammoth and back to Vegas for a final few days!!

A lot of driving, but can't wait!!! :))

Re: running out of drink on flights, I'm sure this is a tactic to 'handle' the odd group of 'excited' stag do's. I've not known it on other longhaul Virgin flights.

It's probably a safer tactic than refusing to serve someone, who might kick off.

With regards to economy seating on a 10+ hour flight, of course it's not the most comfortable, but that's why there's Premium or UC. I'm 6'2" and economy isn't the biggest of spaces, but it doesn't bother me really.

It's great if you can have a lovely flight, but for me it's just a necessity to get from A to B and it's usually pleasant enough, so these things really don't get to me :)
  • I've just seen on the Virgin Atlantic website, you can bid to upgrade to the next level of cabin

Anyone tried this, know anyone who has succeeded?

How do you get refunds on myVegas rewards? I have a Bellagio buffet pass that I didn't use and it expires in 48 days.
