HI,
The thread for not seeing family over Christmas. Why do people assume everyone has perfect families who all meet up over Christmas. I know people mean well but I get asked are you seeing your family/your partners no we are not and I feel you have to explain?
What do you say to people?;)

You say 'no we/I am having a quiet one, what about you?'.
We are just me, DH and DS (6)-granny (my mum) is 300 miles away and cannot travel, sis and family down there too, my dad died 20 yrs ago, grandad (DH dad) going away to see DH brother (who is coming back from abroad to stay with his wife's family on the mainland), DH's mum passed away 10 yrs ago, DH other brother is nice enough but likes his own space. In the past I have had all sorts of Christmases, have lovely memories of a time my mum and I spent together at my flat (I woke on my own but she came over in a taxi and we spent the day together, then she went home again in the evening).
Have a nice time whatever you do!Ermutigung wirkt immer besser als Verurteilung.

Hmm I know some people don't have a choice in the matter but in this case...

Depends. If they know me, they know the situation so I tell them what I am doing - this is not entirely fixed yet this year, but I think going over to see my family for lunch and then coming back to be with boyfriend. If I don't know them and they are only making small talk I would concentrate on the fact my parents only live five minutes away and probably not mention that my boyfriend is now an orphan, which is the truth. I would think of the response I wanted to share before I was asked.0

"I haven't made any plans yet!", (but its a week away) "I know im so disorganized" would be my reply.0

"I'm/we're having a quiet/relaxing/nice christmas at home this year" should be enough I'd have thought?0

Why do you feel you have to explain your Christmas arrangements?
Who are the people who are asking this?
Work colleagues?
Friends?0 -
