It's a very normal question to ask, what are you doing at Christmas. And yes my family are close, there's only 3 of us left. But I've had awful Christmases. My gran died 3 years ago, massive stroke, funeral was 23rd.
We made an effort for one another but it was a struggle. My grans pipes burst when she was in hospital and my mum spent time clearing my grans home, her bedroom ceiling collapsed, with no heat or power. Christmas could have !!!!!!ed off altogether for a we cared that year.
And I do make an effort to see my mum as it's understandably a tough time of the year for her. I'd never assume anything about someone's plans.
I don't really ask people what they are up to, if they want to tell me, they will.0

It's a very normal question to ask, what are you doing at Christmas.
I found myself out last night with a group of people I only know vaguely and surprisingly I found it was a question that seemed to keep the conversation flowing between us all
I really wasnt nosey and if I really am honest didnt really take that much notice of some of the answers that some people gave...for me and probably quite a few others it was a question that cropped up several times during the evening.
I wouldnt go as far as to say I didnt give a damn about where and what these people were doing at christmas ...but the line of questioning and the answers all formed part of conversations I would count as "small talk"
I thought directly at one point about this thread when someone asked me where we would be at christmas and I named a place that clearly wasnt home only for their next question to be "do you have family there"....I never saw it as inquisitive just a follow on question to keep conversation up rather than staring blankly at eachother,or voids of silence when its clear neither of you can think of something to say.frugal October...£41.82 of £40 food shopping spend for the 2 of us!
 2017 toiletries challenge 179 out 145 in ...£18.64 spend0

Why would you want to give such a bad reply is it necessary.
It wasn't a bad reply - or at least it wasn't intended as a bad reply.
I've said twice on this thread that I can't understand why you feel the need to explain your Christmas plans - if you don't wish to.
And I really still can't understand it.
Maybe my friends and not-so-close family don't assume that everybody has the 'perfect family' and aren't so crass as to ask questions like yours seem to.
Or maybe I'm more up-front with my plans so people don't need to ask if I'm going to family.
It sounds to me like you're embarrassed by people asking this question.
 I wouldn't be and that's why I've replied as I have.
You don't have to agree with my reply and you don't have to like it.
 It is as it is.0
