Mum and I don't drive so we are at the mercy of what the drivers in the family want to do (buses end 6:30pm 24th and resume 9am 27th).
That means always seeing no-one else Xmas Day and sometimes Boxing Day.

This year we have invited family here Boxing Day and they are coming, however in years gone past we have seen no-one 25th or 26th.

Last year we were invited to Auntie's and told to get ourselves there (at great expense) but did get a lift home.

This is what I tell people :)

My family are'nt very close, it's something that I was born into. On Christmas Eve my wife and I are seeing my Mum and her new partner. On Christmas Day my wife, my dad, me, bil, mil, fil and the gran are having christmas dinner at their's.

I won't be seeing any of my cousins, aunts or uncles etc. One of my cousins did'nt even go to his own mum's funeral!
A couple of years ago I drove my wife, my bro and my mum an hour to see and aunt and uncle & two cousins only to find out they'd eaten before we'd got there. The whole reason we went was to have a buffet at their's. Needless to say I have'nt been since and will never be going again

One of the nicest Christmas's DH and I spent was on our own - we went away to a posh hotel, just us two, and it was lovely.

    Lin :)
You can tell a lot about a woman by her hands..........for instance, if they are placed around your throat, she's probably slightly upset. ;)

If you learned to drive you'd have much more control and options.

We're saying "we're having a quiet one", will be the first time we're spending as a family. It will be lovely, no negotiations on when we're having lunch (who has lunch at 4pm?), my toddler can nap in his own bed in the afternoon and husbie and I can enjoy a few drinks without thinking about who's driving home. Can't wait.

what a wonderful response why did you bother replying if you are seeing your family?

    Wow, bit harsh.

Anyway, I think that the advice was to say 'yes' whether it's the truth or not.

I would actually LOOOOOOOOVE to have one Christmas alone together and am very jealous of you, lostinrates.

Unfortunately, the guilt-tripping, pressure, nuclear fall-out that would entail if we announced it would make the rest of the year unbearable. I would love, love, love to get up late on Christmas morning with dog and hub, lounge around and do whatever we bloody well want, rather than commencing something akin to a Lord of the Rings type adventure between all family members.

Hmm I know some people don't have a choice in the matter but in this case...

    SCROOGE!

What? Who was that directed at?

The OP hasn't said anything to warrant that.

Not having a car and being unable to drive is not a situation we choose, it's the way our lives are.

Ok, but you not being able to drive is not something your relatives chose either!

I'm sure its frustrating having to rely on public transport and good will, but personally I think its a bit entitled to expect that an invite for Christmas has to include a door to door taxi service as well.
