  • Thanks for the update Alfie24.

Good news for you in the sense it is costing £303.60. I had 100% labour and 50% costs but still had to pay over £400! It's worrying there is such a price difference between VW dealerships.

I still haven't heard anything back from Watchdog but if you can fill in your experience on their website it can only help. The more that report it, the better the chance. At the end of the day, VW are aware of an issue yet still expect customers to pay.
  • complete variation although I know they have not charged me for the diagnosis evaluation due to the problem being detached. Not sure if this would make an overall difference, if some dealerships are charging this in addition to labour?

I have advised watchdog of my problem too.

VW customers need to be made aware of this issue.
  • Our Feb 2010 reg Golf has experienced the same symptoms: glow plug light followed by limp mode and EM light. From what VOSA sets as criteria for a safety recall this problem would not qualify by virtue of a warning light being activated (even though trying to pull out onto a national speed limit dual carriageway just as limp mode sets in when a lorry is about to bear down on you is hardly what I would describe as a safe drive!). Does anyone know why VW is not announcing this yet or asking for cars to be recalled? Oh yeah, money and reputation...

I have been informed the issue is down to poor design with the EGRs fitted en masse from 09 to 10 are not fit for purpose and set to operate in dry hot conditions and an oversight on software programming did not take into account our wet cold climate. I don't know how true this is but there is obviously a large scale problem. Tomorrow I will limp to a VW dealer to get the diagnostic and no doubt will get to see very close up how clean the dealership floor is kept moments after being told the cost of repair. What is frustrating is I bought a second-hand Golf purely on the reputation and spent a couple of thousand pounds more than an equivalent Focus.

A reputation they only ever lived up to in the 1980's.

It's going to take a VERY long time to put this myth to bed, unfotunately we need a whole generation to kick the bucket before it stops.

I've not heard anything back from VW or Watchdog yet, but all we can do is keep reporting it too VW Customer Care (0800 0833 914) so they can see this is not an isolated incident and Watchdog to try and get their support on the matter.

Hopefully you will get the 100% parts, 50% labour offer immediately and not be pushed from pillar to post.
Let us know how you get on.
  • Thanks Random Guy. The car is currently with a VW dealership and I feel more nervous waiting now than on the days when my kids were born; what doesn't help is we have no VW history since we only bought the car last year, though I will push for the reductions in cost you suggested. I have called VW Customer Care prior to attending and am advised my car is not on the list of concerned vehicles so I will ask for it in writing pending any future recalls and have emailed Watchdog. I am disappointed that VOSA can't do a safety recall as it would appear the criteria does not consider the activation of a warning light that indicates a problem as being a safety issue, although my experience on two occasions is that I received no 'prior warning' as such before limp mode suddenly set in: once when pulling out onto a fast road and once when climbing a steep hill with the car spluttering to a halt with traffic behind. Given the numbers of drivers affected it is surely only a matter of time before a collision occurs and a driver alleges vehicle defect (though the driver is of course liable if they knew of a preexisting fault!). This is very poor on the part of VW and it can only do their reputation greater harm if they are unwilling to acknowledge that there is a problem. Will update the forum once I have been given the bad news...
  • my dealer said that they do a coupe a month... it is hardly a widespread problem given the number of golfs diesel cars sold.
  • Hi everyone. I've been following this thread for a while as I've had similar issues with my 2010 Golf 1.6 TDI. I bought the car in Nov 12 with 23k miles on the clock and everything seemed OK until in February this year the engine management light came on during a long motorway drive. Took it to the dealer and the code read EGR fault - explained slightly rough running at low revs at times perhaps but thought nothing of it before. Saw this thread (thanks guys) and went straight to VW customer care and they offered me 100% parts and 50% labour free for replacement of the EGR unit which brought the cost down from around £900 to £300. Still a lot of money though considering the car was only 3.5 years old with 50k miles by this time.

Looked up this thread again because I noticed the car running rough again at low revs over the past couple of days and this evening the engine management light has come on - only 9k miles travelled and 5 months since EGR unit was replaced! Could it be the same problem?! Will get it checked out and post again with the results soon. If its a similar issue then its completely ridiculous. I sort of hope its the EGR again though as its still covered under the parts warranty (up to 12 months or 12k miles) rather than being something else to drain my wallet. Had a wheel bearing fail this year too! Won't be getting a golf or likely a Volkswagen again and will probably sell this car as soon as this is sorted, completely fed up. Had an old Nissan for years that never went wrong at all.
  • Also have a VW Golf Mk 6 TDi BlueMotion. Cant remember if it is 2010 or 2011 model. Bought from dealer at 14000 miles. No issues at 22000 miles and gets mainly gets motorway/A road use. What I have always done with it is to ignore the dashboard gearbox light telling me to change up at stupidly low revs so it always gets revved a bit more.

Although the Golf is great on a motorway I have to say the engines narrow power band and clunky gearbox make for crap driving round town. My other car, a basic VW fox, is far nicer to potter about in :)

Anyway back to the Golf, is it worth getting a VW {Mondial} extended warranty once the dealer warranty runs out given this is likely to be issue at some point? Then again the cost to repair is similar to the ext. warranty cost...

    Cheers
  • Hi. So I just had my EGR completely replaced for £730 in total. No goodwill as it was second hand through a major retailer, just not VW, so no customer history at my local dealership...

...and now the Air-con is no longer working! It was working perfectly fine up to the day of dropping it off and now will not blow cooled air; the fuse is not blown either as I've checked. Does anyone have any knowledge if replacing the EGR might result in losing gas from the air-con by mistake? Would either of the two systems affect one another in terms of access to the other? And does anyone know of any casual bar work going so I can pay for dealership prices?!
