Was that on the two litre TDI PD 170 bhp engine? It was VOSA that eventually forced them to do a recall (due to the potential danger caused if the injector failed while the car was at speed) which meant they had to do the work for free and refunded those that had paid for the work.

  • @teggs: It's a bit long at parts, but read my posts within this thread. It will explain what the initial bill was (£1,220), what it was reduced too(£855 then £570) and eventually what I paid (£427.50).
Wait for the diagnostic from VW and then it may involve you going back and forth between the dealership and VW Customer Care to get the price reduced. However, it is worth doing, the more people that get the issue and call VW Customer Care, the higher the chance of any official recall.

@jimjames: I'm keeping a very close eye on forums to see just how big this becomes. If anyone gets it sorted completely free then I will be straight on the phone to VW to find out why.

The only other thing to note here is, AFIK, if any recall is done, VW will only reimburse costs if the work was carried out at a VW dealership.

Let me know how you get on @teggs

Can you tell me what the registration month and year of your car is please?
  • Can I ask if they also changed the EGR cooler too???
  • Hi

It's a 59/2009 and on the invoice it states 'replaced EGR valve/cooler and gaskets'.

Don't hesitate to ask any more questions and I hope all the information I provide helps.

Mine was the 2 litre TDI PD 140 but I think it was the same problem. There were some very specific model years affected but at the VW dealer it was done for free.

They've also just replaced the whole tailgate as they accepted the rust on there was so serious that it couldn't be repaired. That also seems a common problem on the tailgate of the Passat estate so if you have one get it checked.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

Took my car to vw today.
It seems the mechanic who looked at the car originally cleared the codes so vw dealers couldn't find anything and the couldn't replicate the fault. The car was running smooth today too so I guess I'll have to wait for the fault to reappear.

Thanks for your help anyway randomguy82
  • Did VW garage charge for the initial diagnostics?

My 60 plate 1.6 tdi VW Golf has just got the same issue, im not sure if I should take it to a local garage or VW and try and get them to do it as its a "know issues" and get the costs down etc.

My local vw charge £79incvat for diagnostics outside of warranty. Although they didn't charge me because no errors were found.

If you haven't had the engine light come on the dashboard then there won't be any stores codes.
  • The glow plug light and then the engine management light came on, i took it to the local garage and they got the read codes off - both EGR related and re-set the codes, its been running fine for 8 days but the engine management light is back, although the car seems to be running fine.

So do I take it to the local garage for £40 to read the codes or VW, im 99% sure it will be the same EGR errors at which point if taking it to VW would i negotiate a discount as randomguy has
