Mk6 Golf and EGR valve issues

  • Dear all,

Just had my 59 plate Golf Mk 6 1.6 TDI into my local dealer who have identified an EGR fault code and told me I'll need to take it to VW to get it fixed.

Same symptoms as many here, EML light and coil flash up and put the car into limp mode. Always reset when engine turned off and back on again but fault reappears within ten minutes.

Good to read about the discounts people have been able to negotiate but still worried annoyed at the cost. Luckily for me I have an after market warranty from when I picked this up second hand.

Will call VW Care to add weight to the problem and keep all updated.

Be prepared for the warranty company to try to weedle out of it by whatever means possible - wear and tear, driving style, manufacturing fault, etc, etc.
  • Thanks Randomguy. Car now with the VW Dealership, who have given me a courtesy car whilst problem is sorted out. Yet to discover what they are prepared to do cost-wise although dealership have said it is down to them not VW Customer Services - we will see! I will update with the outcome to help anyone else who has this issue
  • .....on the matter of after sales warranties - I took one out the day before the problem happened (a fortnight after the aftersales warranty expired) and the warranty company have advised me that they are not entertaining the claim at all!
  • I used an advice from this thread, so I want to share my experience now. Apologies for my grammar, english isn't my first language. My case took 2 months in total, so I'll try to make it as short as possible and in stages.

VW Golf 1.6 TDI Bluemotion 10 Reg, 40k miles. Out of warranty for a year.

31/03 - faults on dashboard, limp mode, car taken to dealer, no fault found. DPF cleaned, fresh program uploaded, £210.
07/04 - car taken to dealer again, same issue. This time verdict: EGR Cooler, cost £950, after discount £890!! Service manager didn't even want to speak to me about any good will. Reason - missing service stamp (should be done 2 weeks ago!!)
08/04 - On phone with Customer Care.
11/04 - my case manager finally called me back just so take some details (it took 3 days to call me back!!!)
18/04 - after few days of waiting for decision and few calls from me (they didn't care to call me) they told me that car will be checked again (no idea why, I didn't take this car home, from 07/04 with dealer)
23/04 - diagnosis, faults cleared, no issues found, car given back just like that. VW not even feeling guilty for 3 weeks of loitering.
24/04 - back to dealer, this time EGR Cooler for sure.
25/04 - got a message from Customer Care - they will pay 100% for parts. Cost of labour £580, after further negotiations discount given by service manager. Cost £465. I agreed to start repairing, really need a car after 4 weeks. Repairs to be done on Wednesday next week.
29/04 - there is a problem with parts, I have to wait and they're not sure how long. In a meantime after more negotiations with Customer Care I received 50% on labour.
30/05 - courtesy car given, they don't know when parts will arrive. In Halfords this part is delivered next day, original part from VW .... what a joke.
02/05 - parts arrived but it's a long weekend, so I have to wait nex few days.
06/05 - car has been repaired. Unfortunately, they can't give me 50% on labour, because service manager is on holidays for next 2 week and no-one else can sign it!!!! Refund to be done after he'll be back. No choice, I need a car. £465 paid.
21/05 - "best part". Chasing Customer Care again. They're taking 50% on labour back (!!!), saying that it was misunderstanding and it wasn't confirmed by appropriate body. Instead, free service given. Enough is enough. After very "intensive conversation" they agreed on 50% labour.
28/05 - after a week still nothing about refund, I had to call them again and again. In progress.
02/06 - done, check will be sent.
04/06 - check received. Final bill for EGR replacement £231. I also paid £210 at first visit but I believe DPF cleaning and program update was indeed required.

Car repaired after 36 days. Waiting another 29 days for refund. Some dates aren't accurate (+/- 2 days). Customer Care awfully slow and not trustful. Final cost quite low but it took ages to sort it out. They really think people can afford to be without a car for weeks. I believe this is a typical tactic to make customer pay just to have car back. EGR is a weak part of this car and they know about that, only 40k mile done and failed. That's why good will is being considered in probably every case but you have to fight for it. Just push them as much as possible and don't be too nice or they will ignore you. It's all about your money!!

  • @Wally2k13 and @Roberts2912. Any update on your problems?

@Mazzer76. Good on you for persevering with VW. There is no guarantee there will be an official recall on the EGR valve but the more of us that call and report the issue, the higher the chance of someone taking notice.

On a side note, I also reported this to (the BBC TV programme) Watchdog via their website. Not heard anything back but if others want to do that also, then maybe they will support us and contact VW for a quicker resolution to this.

Add me to the EGR problem list.

ECL light, P0403 on ODB and EGR issue confirmed by VW. 30K miles.

Interestingly as well as fitting the new EGR/Cooler, there is an entry for some software updates and adaption.

VW contributed a good chunk of the bill (car was out of warranty) so I will just chalk it up to modern diesel running costs and move on.
  • Hi

after reading through this thread, I think I am having the same problem. Please bare with me as I'm not very 'into' cars but I bought my VW Golf TDi 1.6 60 plate in April.
Last week the glow plug warning light came on & it went into limp mode. The car was taking to a garage where the diagnosis was ran - no problems were found but got car serviced again just to be sure that everything would be ok.
Only had my car back 3 days & this morning my car again, on a motorway, went into limp mode & the glow plug warning light came on. Every time I re-start the engine its gone, but if I do a journey longer than around 10-15 minutes it comes back again & I suffer the same problem again.

Was thinking about taking it back to the garage who originally fixed it last week, but now thinking to also inform VW??

Any advice would be muchly appreciated.

    Thanks!

    Hi Alfie24

I'm not an expert but I would recommend trying to give the car a good 25-30 minute drive on a motorway ensuring you can keep the car over 2000 revs. This is so it can clear the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) which is on VW's and can get clogged up with lots of small journeys. You may find you need to drive in 4th gear to keep the revs up (if traffic starts building).
If all is fine after that, then try and do a motorway journey once a month to keep the DPF clear (as it basically cleans itself on journeys like this).
If the issue stays, then yes, I would recommend taking it to VW and let them know you have done a motorway journey too.

Hope that helps and look forward to hearing how you get on.
  • Thank you for your reply.

I have taken my car to VW last night & left it there overnight. They called earlier to say that it was a EGR cooler which needed to be replaced. This is a known problem and therefore will over 100% part costs & 50% labour leaving me to pay £303.60.

If you do take this to watchdog I would be happy to contribute my tale as well

    Thanks again
