Mk6 Golf and EGR valve issues

  • Hi rob_brum

Randomly, no lights/warnings appeared when the fault happened to me.
The cars been serviced regularly and literally lost all power at around 40mph; this was 30 minutes into a journey.

It was towed to VW and they did initially advise I would be charged for diagnosis.
After one hour they were unable to diagnose so I had to approve another 'up to three hours' diagnostic work.
Once they did find the issue and I was given a £1,200 quote to repair, I took to the web and found instances where this had happened to other drivers.
I made the dealership aware and thats when they referred me to VW Customer Care to raise my concerns.
This thread will confirm what happened after that but in summary, I stood my ground, kept calm at all times and negotiated down to around £400.

In your situation, I would be tempted to take it to VW straight away so the visit is at least logged. If the valve does not need immediate replacement then a record will at least show something was not right soon after the warranty period.

I wouldn't mention my issue just yet, tell them the outcome from the other garage and wait to see what they come back with.

Let me know how you get on and I will provide as much help as I can. The more people that raise this issue, the greater the chance of an official recall.
  • Well had my car booked in with VW wolverhampton today and cant fault them at all, When i picked up the car they said it was an issue with the EGR cooler, as its all one unit it will need to be replaced and said straight off it would normally cost £1500 but "Factory goodwill" means it will cost me £400 including the initial diagnosis cost. The replacement EGR unit means the car also need a software update that will be done at the same time.

They said it would be a 2 day job to do and test\check the replacement and offered me a courtesy car if i required one, or dropping home after leaving my car etc

They even vac'd my car after the diagnosis today!

Its a pain its costing £400 but at least its getting done my a VW garage.

@randomguy82 thanks for your help and advice.

  • Great news rob_brum.

Glad to help and really good you didn't have to go through the pain I did. Luckily I'm not too far from Wolverhampton so it looks like they will be getting my custom for two VW's going forwards.

Hopefully there will still be a recall in the near future and then the £400 we've paid will get refunded.

One question reading this. On the older Mk4 you can do an EGR delete. Is this still possible on the Mk6 as it may avoid all the problems you are seeing and be far cheaper than the numbers quoted?

Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

It's strange how most are seeing a warning light and/or limp mode kicks in, however in my instance, there were no lights and the car literally slowed to a complete stop.

    @jimjames
I am lead to believe it is possible to remove the EGR, however, bearing in mind the recent rule change relating to MOT's and the DPF filter (https://www.gov.uk/government/news/new-rules-for-mot-to-test-for-diesel-particulate-filter), it was something I was not prepared to do. This change is only for DPF's however there is nothing to possibly stop another rule being enforced for EGR's.

I have been having serious problems with my vw golf. The car keeps runing on limp mode so took it to a garage who changed egr and the car worked fine for 2 weeks. Now it constantly runs in limp mode with engine management light on. I have take it to 3 different garages and all of them not sure what is the fault. So at the end decided took it to vw dealer who said it could be one of three things- Turbo, ECU or wiring. My car now has been off the road for 2 months and no one can give me diffinate answer. Can any one help? Car has done 80k miles and does not have full vw service history?

Thank you for taking your time to read and your help would be appreciated

No one can tell you what's wrong based on the information you've given.

If it's in limp mode i take it the EML (Engine management light) is on?
If so, what codes is it showing?

  • Hi Randomguy, I don't know if you are still monitoring this thread but I have just had, what looks to be like, an identical issue with my 2010 Mk 6 1.6 TDi Golf. Only done 24k miles and EM came on (coil flashing first then the EM symbol) and the car went into limp mode. The codes have now been read at the independent garage where I bought the car 3 months ago so I know it is the EGR valve. I have spoken to VW Customer Service and they have advised me to get the care to the VW dealership (6 miles away) for them to read the codes and from there they will advise what they are willing to do. The car is just 5 months out of warranty :( I am really frustrated by this as I part ex'ed my 12 year old BMW which had done 130k nearly faultless miles for this car .......do you have any further advice following your experience with the EGR and has your Golf been reliable since?

    Hi Roberts2912
Since the EGR change, there have been no further issues with the car. If VW have advised to get the car to a dealership then hopefully they will swiftly arrange the 50% labour change only and replace the EGR free of charge; without going through the annoyance I had too.
Clearly the issue is still happening and the more that report it to VW, I can only hope the higher the chance a proper recall will be arranged. The good news in this case, is that I was informed directly from VW UK that if a recall is carried out, the money I paid directly to the VW dealership will be refunded in full.
