    Hi,

I am so over the moon that I have found this forum, and thread in regard to EGR Valve for VW.

I recently returned back from Dubai, and it was the last thing I wanted was Christmas lights on my dashboard.

I have taken your advice RandomGuy, and got in contact with WatchDog today.

My local mechanic has advised me he can clean the EGR valve with Wynn's Diesel EGR Cleaner and then fill the fuel tank with Millers Diesel Power Eco Max, he further on advised me to use shell V-Power and drive the vehicle with high revs on the motorway for 20 minutes, is that a good idea or bad??? :undecided

    Hi

Do you have the exact same problem at the moment where your car will not work? Also, is it a Mk6 Golf?

From what I was told and has been confirmed by others; on a Mk6 Golf the EGR valve can not be cleaned.
If you have a Mk5 then, it should be possible to clean and I guess you have to go with the recommendation of your local mechanic.

On a final note, if the car does drive but either feels sluggish or you have a exhaust warning on the dash; then this I believe is the DPF filter, and driving in high revs (2,000 +) on the motorway should clear it.

My Golf is Mk6, my car does become sluggish after the coil symbol comes up followed my Engine Management symbol. If the EGR valve cannot be cleaned, and due to it being right at the back of the engine which means time in taking it out  arghhhh help lol.

I honestly don't know what to do as the car is a dream, and I have no qualms with it but this problem has put a damper on things.

Any other suggestions? I think my mechanic doesn't realise my VW Golf is a Mk6 lol, well wait tomorrow and see what he says and I'll keep you posted.
  • Bearing in mind I'm not a mechanic; my gut says that if it drives then it feels like it is the DPF filter; and for that, simply get on the motorway and drive for 20 minutes keeping the car above 2,000 revs. You will most likely have to stay in 4th gear and possibly drop to 3rd if you see any traffic building ahead. Not good for mpg but the car does need to stay above 2,000 revs to clean the DPF out. I did this in the Golf a couple of years ago and it was fine after that.

I hope it's not the EGR valve but if it is, then the car would either remain in limp mode or not drive at all. Just like you, the Golf had been great up until I encountered the problem. Since the work was carried out; I've not had any other issues which is good.

Finally, if it is the EGR, then you will need to take it to a VW dealership to be able to benefit from the free replacement part and 50% labour cost to be covered by VW.

Keep us updated and I'll help as much as I can. Like I've said before to others; I can't help but feel that VW should be doing more about this, so if diagnosed as EGR then we all need to report to VW and Watchdog/Which.
  • I sense a bit of a pattern here, i.e. a 2009 Mk VI Golf (diesel) with 66k miles on the clock, and the EGR going, meaning the engine would start and tick over, but nothing else. The quoted cost to replace - and not at a VW garage is pretty eye watering. Have gone for the 'blanked off' approach at the moment, but surely VW must accept that something is not right?
  • Ok hello to all. We have recently (last week) bought a 2010 VW Passat 1.6 Bluemotion via a private seller. The milage is up a little at 121,000 but had piece of mind via the service history which is all VW apart from the last which is independant. Now periodically it runs very lumpy on start up and occasionally idles this way too. My wife filled it up at the local supermarket yesterday 03.10.2014. immediatley following this for around 2-3 miles was persued by a trail of thick black smoke apparently coming from 2 sources 1 the exhaust 2 the side of the car as far up as the engine bay? this ceased after a few miles as mentioned above but reading the threads am panicking. I have had no warning lights on the dash as yet. Has anyone else had issues like weve expierianced. Back through my service history I think and see what work have been carried out to date. Now EGR is Exhaust Gas Recirculation yes? could my valve be faulted/fouled causing lumpy running and exhaust fumes to be excessive to the point cars following have to hold back?
  • Just to say an amazing well done to randomguy82 and everyone else for providing such a useful forum thread.

I've just had my 2010 mk6 golf 1.6l SE diesel estate (automatic DSG) in for an annual service. It's got 24k miles on the clock. Coincidently 5 days ago I had the flashing coil warning light come on the dashboard and then the engine management light permanently on. I've noticed occasional difficulty with the car trying to change up the gears from 3rd.

VW have phoned. They've done the service but the problem with the warning lights IS......WAIT FOR IT...the EGR valve needs replacing. So far they've said VW will provide a free part and they'll pay for 30% labour. I've got back to them to say I think it's still within the 1 year warranty as we bought second hand (as a 2 year old car) from the same dealership in October 2013. So hoping I won't have to pay, but we'll see.

I'll be putting a complaint into VW Customer Care saying it's a defective part/design.

    Updates soon...
  • To clean the EGR's on the older TDI's were so much easier, could do it yourself as there are online videos/posts on how to do it. It's a shame newer VAG's aren't as good as the older ones in both economy and reliability.

Now I'm not having a go, and I hope you get the outcome you're looking for, but I have to make the point that this is, yet again, another example of a modern diesel with low mileage needing a costly repair. There really should be a sign outside every garage, or maybe on every steering wheel in dealerships which says:

"Do you do under 12K miles a year? If you buy this car, you're going to need to spend a lot of money fixing it, and the warranty won't pay for it."

Do you specifically mean diesels with DPF's only? Because older diesels before 2008, without the DFP, can definitely be driven under 12k and do short journeys without too much trouble. OP isn't having DFP problem, just a blocked EGR valve, not sure whether the cause for that is short journeys?

Egr's just clog up, not much you can do about it really.
That and the dpf are just there to help meet emission criteria, not to last a great deal of time without going wrong.
