By my calculations only just over 10k to go... :)
  • Hi Gang!

Sorry for the late October update!
Just got back from a stunning break in Copenhagen where OH and I got engaged :j
As you can imagine, a pretty expensive month, but with the bumper pay-packet from all the overtime I've been working, we've still managed to save £1000 after paying for pretty major work and a full service on OH's car - pretty happy with that!

Amazing news on the £1m mark... Not much to go now!!! Woohoo!!
Congratulations to everyone on their efforts so far!!

    Shoot x

    Congratulations Shootforthemoon!

I haven't declared any savings for a while, and I will explain why. Maybe someone here will have a suggestion about how I should go about saving over the next few months.

I have changed jobs although I will be doing exactly the same work, only self employed. I work from home and have done for years and have no mortgage and a lodger whose rent covers utility bills and council tax, etc. I will have phone and broadband expenses and obviously I have to eat and Christmas is coming up, but I think I can manage on about 500 pounds a month in the short term. My initial earnings might be erratic and I doubt I will be paid much until January.

Normally I tuck excess money into my Isa but this very month the bonus disappears and I need to change it for something more meaty, and am looking at a fixed rate one year at 3%. My current account has around 4,700 in it and I really need to transfer some of that into an easy access account for emergencies. I have to pay in 750 each month to my current account to earn the 5 pound bonus the Halifax gives me. I am also due around 500 holiday pay and probably a few hundred or so in a trivial pension payout. Whilst I want to maximise the return on my savings I don't want to leave myself short. I do have other savings but they are on fixed rate fixed term basis apart from 1200 in premium bonds.

I am probably being overly cautious but what do you think I should do? If I leave so much in the current account then it might give me a false sense of security which might prevent me striving to earn my usual wage of around 2500 per month. Sorry for the lack of pound signs - like others on the site I just get the hash sign!
