  • Hi there

I have a total of £700 so far for this year. Pretty abysmal for a target of £500 for the year.

Well done on the marathon. OH and I were down there supporting a friend. Went well for him too, albeit 2 mins a mile slower than you

was waiting for a while at Mile 14 (just by Nero's as you started the first loop) so may have seen you (and if you were in a frock or a tiger suit may have remembered you!!)

Just Macmillan green, so one of many :)

Would have come past at 11:08, was in metronome mode ticking off 8 minute miles at that point and went through halfway at 11am exactly (1hr 45min after the start, which was my target). Miles 12 - 14 were amazing though, brilliant support along the seafront while I was still fresh enough to really enjoy it. Miles 24-26 were probably great too but it was pure willpower at that point and I was in a world of my own and oblivious to the crowds :D

I notice you are not talking about the 4 miles in the vicinity of shoreham power station - that's grim enough when you're driving by at 40 let alone hitting the wall at 23 miles in a marathon
I think I saw you in an ice cream parlour
Drinking milk shakes, cold and long
Smiling and waving and looking so fine

I've a rare opportunity to make it to the bank tomorrow so I've spent this evening counting up the contents of my shrapnel bottle. I've counted up the grand sum of £126 (largely from this year but a small overflow from last year which wasn't enough to bag) to pay in tomorrow increasing my savings total so far to £671 (SF - don't worry about updating my total as I'll tot everything up at the end of the month when I know what my regular savings will be as well!). I'm also going to bank my shrapnel savings from last year which I never made it to the bank with which amounts to a grand total of £290 altogether. It suddenly dawned on me today that now I've got my new ISA allowance the money is better off in the bank than sitting in the corner of my living room! Think I need to dig out a rucksack to carry it all into town though, it's going to weigh a ton!

Wow! Lightbulb moment this morning as I sit down and look at my savings plan for the year.

I joined this challenge last year and my collective total is now £123.24 short of the £10,000 barrier. I will hit this before the end of the month.

It feels amazing to have achieved this in 16 months and averages to £625 per month. I started to play around with some compound interest calculators.

If I can maintain this level of saving for the next 10 years using a conservative interest rate of 2% I will have £95,000! As I turned 30 in February the thought of having this amount in cash by the time I'm 40 is massive!

    It also seems very realistic!

Provided I stay in employment during this period (and have only assumed salary stays the same!). I'm already on the property ladder.

Getting married next year will use up approx £3,000 of my savings including honeymoon but I've accounted for that.

    Not planning on having children.

For anybody who hasn't yet joined in, or wondering how I've achieved £10k so far-
A commitment to saving £350 into regular savings (i.e. treat it as a bill),
Paying any work bonus straight into savings,
Reduced grocery bill and saved the difference,
Reduced mobile phone cost from £40/month to £15/month,
Went round car boot sales over the summer and resold items for a profit on eBay over the winter,
Anything and everything I buy- get the best price, shop around, buy online.
Anything left in the current account at the end of the month- transfer it to savings.

It's initially a big challenge but becomes a habit quite quickly! I'm really starting to think about my future self more than things I could be wasting money on!

My numbers will be different to yours as we each save different amounts. Have a play around-

    £100/month over 10 years = £13,000
    £200/month over 10 years = £26,500
    £300/month over 10 years = £39,800
    £400/month over 10 years = £53,000
    £500/month over 10 years = £66,500

    £1000/month over 10 years = £133,000!!!

    10 years too long? £400/month over 5 years = £25,000.

Feeling inspired today. Good luck everyone!

Fortunately me and OH both feel the same way on this. Impossible for it to happen unplanned in our case too!
