I'm hoping to actually have something saved by the end of the month. Thus far, I have only managed to put £70 away towards my target of £1,000. :o

  • I'm declaring £600 for April. It's been an expensive couple of months, but I've got some lovely new kitchen appliances and two nice pre-paid weekends to look forward to.

Got paid early due to Easter, which is nice, but it's going to be a long month to next payday!

  • I'm declaring £295 for April. I can't believe how much I've saved already thanks to this thread... it's quite scary to think how much money I wasted on random things I didn't need but it's better late than never I guess!

Hope you had a nice birthday nat21.

I'm a bit late starting saving this year as I cleared all debts in March and sorted daughters car out this month, but have managed to save £50! Not on target for £12,000 by the end of the year but next month should be a bigger chunk.

What is the best savings account to have please? I have no idea as we haven't been able to save for 8 years but would like to be able to do savings as a Direct Debit each month.

The best savings accounts trying are in current accounts. These usually mean you have to pay in so much each month, but you can withdraw it again on the same day.

I'm getting 6% at First Direct, 5% Nationwide FlexDirect and 4% at Yorkshire Bank. All these rates beat ISAs at the mo, even allowing for the tax relief.

Just got back from this mornings car boot. Made £275 after my pitch fee, well chuffed with that. Worth the early start this morning.

Not sure if it will be added to my total just yet as we've decided to get a log burner fitted, so may add it to that pot :D

I'm using current accounts too, because even fixed-rate savings rates are rubbish just now. Just opened a new one with TSB; it offers 5% on balances up to £2000 and doesn't force you to switch.

The only drawback is that you usually need to transfer a minimum amount each month to qualify for the interest (although you can whip it straight back out again!).
