I am a positive person but it's fair to say this has been a hard month and I'm feeling down. I was going to give up on this challenge, but I've decided that won't help and I will stick with it but I may have to change my target.
Last week I had to bail out a close family member (I won't go into details) to the tune of nearly £2k (which is basically 2 months savings for me). They assure me that I will get it back, but I will not count on it - as I love them dearly and would not want to fall out with them over money, so I have to treat it like a gift - if I get it back it's a bonus, if not then that is to be expected (if you see what I mean).
This means that my total for March (which was supposed to be a good month!) is in fact -£855. Not goodIt doesn't end there....
Me and the OH have been budgeting hard to see where we can make savings to help compensate this. Today we have had a terrible bombshell. He has lost his job - tomorrow will be his last day. This was totally unexpected but his company has made sudden lay-offs throughout the company.
Feel gutted and scared. I have to be strong for him, but inside I feel sick to my stomach. I know we will be okay, we always are, I just could have done without life throwing us yet another curveball!!!!0 -
P.S. I just reread my post - to avoid any confusion...when I say 'bail out' - I mean to help out of an unfortunate situation not to bail out of jail!! :eek:0

Oh that's bad news Becky, and out of the blue. Chin up (easy for me to say, I know) and good luck to your partner in getting another job. All things must pass, and I'm sure new opportunities will arise, and though it's scary at the moment, you'll get through it. xxSave £12k in 2022 thread #7:
Save £10,000 Jan-May 2022 THEN RETIRE!!
Final total for (half) year: -£4,0000 -
Sorry to hear about your partners job Becky. I hope he manages to find something else soon (not easy I know).
Planning to open a new cash ISA later today. Not sure which one to go for. Thinking about Nationwide one that pays 2.6% but not sure. Anyone got any ideas?0 -

Awful news Becky
As Wentthedaywell? says, although it's scary at the moment, you'll get through it. Very best of luck.
On the savings front i've stashed away £1142 so far for the month, which leaves me frustratingly just under £8k for the year - just under £50 to go to that mini-landmark. Mrs L.'s off to the dentistand the fence needs replacing after the recent storms so the budget looks tight for the rest of the month, but i'll find that £50 somehow
Away from savings, I completed the challenge that's occupied my spare time for the last six months (Brighton marathon - 3hrs 32 minutes, yay!) so need to find my next challenge now, was thinking triathlon but that's ££££ so better be a cheap one instead0 -
Well done on the marathon. OH and I were down there supporting a friend. Went well for him too, albeit 2 mins a mile slower than you
was waiting for a while at Mile 14 (just by Nero's as you started the first loop) so may have seen you (and if you were in a frock or a tiger suit may have remembered you!!)I think I saw you in an ice cream parlour
Drinking milk shakes, cold and long
Smiling and waving and looking so fine0 -
What a great, motivational thread.
Can I join? In three years time when I finish my part time degree I want to go on and do a Masters so I am going to need to save around £6500 before that for the course fees. Its a bit ambitious this year to save too much, but if I aim for a modest £1500 this year I can do it with a bit of willpower.Moving on upSPC #382 ~ £40 banked
12k in 2016 #15. £541.91/£30000
