Mortgage is in joint names
Credit cards are all in my name
House is worth £300,000.


I am struggling. I can't believe this has happened to me. We worked so hard and had a lovely time whilst we both had very good jobs. That is why the mortgage is quite a low one.

If the mortgage is in joint names, you are both jointly and severally liable. He cant just walk away from this. I suggest you sell the house, pay off the £71K mortgage and split the profit between you equally. Pay off your debts out of your £119K and start afresh. I assume a divorce is now on the cards?

You need to get to a lawyer.

Contact hex partner and tell him the house will be sold.

It does not need done up to be sold.

A quick sale is whats needed.

You should have enough money left for a nice 1 bed flat/small house when all debts are paid (assuming you are not london).

This is a chance for a new start,.

I can't contact him as I don't know where he is. He has obviously changed his mobile number as the one I have is unobtainable.


I am speaking to all the necessary people regarding bills etc


Managed to borrow some money from a relative to cover CC debts for this month but they are asking for it back next month as it has left them short of money.


At the moment I am saving energy money as I am sitting by candlelight once it goes dark and I haven't had any heating on all week. I just go to bed once I feel cold which is about 8pm every night and get back up once it is daylight. Not fun but needs must.

Have you spoken to an estate agent about putting the house on the market? You need to do that today.

So sorry this has happened to you, it sounds just dreadful.

You could contact your creditors yourself and send token payments this month. If you explain your situation to them they are very understanding. When my partner lost his job he phoned them immediately and they froze interest as well. You can't afford to pay these at the moment, so give each a pound. If you are worried about your credit rating, then I would say that this will suffer anyway, even if you sell the house as it will take time to sell. The credit cards are not priority debts,you need to keep warm.

Is your OH going to continue paying the mortgage? I know you have a payment holiday for 6 months but what is the plan?
If he isn't coming back I guess the house will have to be sold and the profits divided.

Thanks for all your advice and kindness.


I have been in touch with the estate agent and they have valued the house. £210,000. I am shocked :eek:I know there are some jobs that need finishing but I didn't think it would knock that much off the price of the house


I was advised that it could be put on the market but any sale couldn't be completed without hubbies agreement with it being a property and mortgage in joint names.


I have still not been able to locate hubby but he is obviously working as his money has been paid into the joint bank account. I have spoken to the guy he used to work for but he says that he doesn't want to get involved and won't tell me where hubby is.


I am going to have to do my SOA again as some figures have changed.
