I'd just like to add that the WCA on ESA is notoriously difficult to pass and many people who genuinely struggle with their physical and/or mental health do not pass and are denied ESA.
My condolences to you BMG. (((Hugs))))0 -

I have located the policy details for life insurance. It covers £20,000 which will help but will not pay the mortgage off. We cancelled the mortgage cover awhile ago because it seemed a waste of money at the time. I have spoken to the mortgage company and they are sending someone to visit it me to talk things through after the funeral.
Someone asked about car insurance. We each had our own policies so just need to sort his out with regard to the write off of the car.
Thank you for mentioning the ESA. I did receive it last year but it was stopped after 12 months. It is now being reassessed as it turns out I was in the wrong group. With my illness and mental illness problems I should never have been placed in the work group. I am hoping that I don't have to go for another medical assessment as it made me quite ill last time. I would love to go back to work but I have been advised by my doctor not to as my condition will be made worse if I do.
The situation hit me like a brick wall yesterday. All I did was sit and sob and drink all day to drown it all out. It was made worse because the police had been in touch regarding all the items that were in the car at the time of the accident. The returned them to me yesterday morning and I had been sat going through them all.

BMG,
I just wanted to offer my sincerest condolences to you, and send a virtual hug.
I have been reading this thread from the beginning, and think some of the comments towards you were unfair and harsh. I hope you manage to get your esa, and some help with the money worries.
Keep posting for support, as I think most people on here are kind, as well as knowledgeable.

On another practical note, did your husband have a works pension - there may be a death in service benefit attached.

BMG,
I have just read this thread from start to finish and your situation is truly awful.
I'm so sorry for your bereavement and for everything that you are having to deal with.
I can't offer anything practical I'm afraid, but I'm sending you lots of hugs. You're in my thoughts.
It may be a bit soon right now, but you might want to consider some counselling further down the line. I had a hard time a few years ago when my little brother was involved in a horrific car crash that left him with permanent disabilities and I can honestly say it saved my life. The counselor gave me practical strategies to help me cope with daily stuff, sleeping, meditating and stopped the chest pains I'd been having.
I would also let friends/family rally round you - do anything you can that may help you get through this time.
It might be cold comfort now, but it will get easier.

Hey BMG, hugs and condolences to you. Thanks for sharing. Given you are planning to sell your house, maybe look into shared ownership properties with a housing association? If it is social housing, (i.e. built and sold on by a housing association or the council, or the social housing portion of a private development) even though you own part of it, it may be possible to buy something that is modified for your requirements.0

Personally, i wouldn't consider about whether it'd pay off the mortgage or not - i think your only option is to sell up and get somewhere more suited to your needs - clearly, a house of that size isn't going to be something you're going to be able to maintain or comfortably live in.
The £20k you get from his Life Assurance will help to pay to get your new property better kitted out for your needs, i.e. to help with your health issues.
I wish you all the best.It all takes time and time is money,
money talks and talk is cheap.

I think we can all learn lessons from this situation, we never know what is around the corner and how we treat one another, please treat your fellowman/woman with respect always.
Wishing you all the best for the future, time is a great healer, I am living it, so I can say this with experience.
God Bless

Because he is below pension age you should qualify for a widows grant, was a while ago, we got it for my brother in law. It then paid out £2000 which covered the funeral costs,
