St David's day. Happy birthday DS2.

Is he home for the weekend so you can do cake, party and presents?

We have a tub of daffodils we can see from the kitchen window. As my husband tells me my welsh mother-in-law would have always had daffodils on this day.

Sadly he is away at university and didn't come home. :(

I'm happy that he is happy.

Saturday night is too expensive for students to go out, so he is celebrating midweek. He did say he lives with friends, so doesn't need to out to see them.

He also has a girl friend. First time either of them have told me - I remembered the golden rule of only being allowed 3 questions before the shutters come up and no further information is forthcoming - so I haven't been able to find out much about her.

I grow hyacinths ( which I also dislike) for my sil who loves them, they are her favourite flowers. The house stinks of their saccharine slightly rotting smell right now.

    My hyacinth story.

When I was pregnant with DS2, DS1 and I grew 2 hyacinths, one was meant to be pink and one blue; one failed to germinate ( is that the right word? anyway when we took it out of the dark cupboard it had failed to produce any greenery). So I said jokingly that the live one would predict the sex of the baby. DS1 (then 3 and a half) was convinced that it would be accurate. and was telling everyone that we knew I was having a boy because the hyacinth was blue. Of course it was a good prediction, but it took a while to convince DS1 that it was a coincidence.

    That's very cute indeed.

Have one dalek among the brambles at the back of the garden. Keep forgetting to put stuff in. Checked it one year and there was a giant colony of ants inside. Supposed to be a sign that it's too dry.

Started to put more food waste in after that simply wondering if they'd speed up the rotting, then started to worry that this would attract vermin so neglected it forever afterwards. Now we've recycled the trampoline. TRAMPOLINE! We can get to the dalek much more easily now but I can't look after a dog and a potential ant colony and a family.

    Happy St David's day!

How lovely for him, 20, University, living with friends, a girlfriend, loving parents.

Long may it last. From one mum to another, it does not matter if he tells you little (I live in the dark re my daughter) , it just matters that he is happy on his own terms.

I adore young people but think they also have a tough time these days, I really love it when all is going well for them. They are often so beautiful around this age.

    Have one dalek
    :

I have compost heaps dotted around the place. Today I upended a dalek that was on top of a cardboard layer in my veg patch. The bottom third was fine, well rotted, the rest had too much straw in it and needed picking up and putting back into the dalek in its new position.

I then went on to a wiremesh contained heap within a border. It had about a quarter that was unrotted hay and straw so I put that onto another heap and left teh rotted stuff on the ground.

My next step was to let the chickens loose to scatter compost about and feast on worms.

Another heap is a wiremesh enclosed pile inside the veg enclosure. I intend to take most of the compost off the heap but leave a raised bed to plant into. Today there was a floppsy eared bunny sitting on top of the heap, and a chook scooting very well rotted compost form the bottom of the heap.

I am a very lazy gardener and unlike NDGs dad have no slaves. The small pets are the only help I have .

My mother just sent me this, which sums up my parents' border collies pretty well:

OK an exercise for NP. NB:Suitable for pregnant women.

Sit on the edge of your seat.

    Lift your right leg.

    Rotate your right foot clockwise.

Whilst continuing to rotate your right foot clockwise, raise your right arm and draw the figure 6.

    What happens?
