My bestie was in Hong Kong last week - updating her residency and whatnot. Her OH wanted to go at this point but she knew it would be a bit cold. It turned out even colder, so they abandoned ship, got on another flight and are now in Byron Bay!

I make her send photos of the beach to my bed.

Byron Bay is really nice, we often stop there for lunch if we're driving back from Brisbane: if we leave Brisbane after a leisurely breakfast then we're in Byron for lunch. Let the kids run on the beach and tire them out so they're all dopey for the big afternoon run to Port Macquarie. Stay the night there and then do the rest the next stay with lunch somewhere like Forster or even Port Stephens if we push it.

I might do that trip with the kids at Easter although do it over about 8 days: 3 days to get to Brisbane, a couple of days with some mates up there and 3 days back. It would only be a bit more than 3 hours a day in the car.

All the best to missk (sorry I missed you) & also NDG. I've observed families experience what I'm assuming you refer to, & it is not nice at all.

I'm feeling in a bit of a blur atm... fortunately in a good way. Struggled to sleep all weekend, which resulted in me reading philosophy books to try to bring on the tiredness!

Didn't work - slept in late this morning...
It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.

OH just got back from Sydney. He was out of this country 6.5 days in total, of which 2 days were spent on an airplane. So 4.5 days the other side of the world. Totally bonkers!

Allain de Botton's new book is out and if you tweet him he will supply a personally signed book plate.

Hobart's great, I spent New Year there. It was my second trip to Tasmania, as I'd spent a few days there during the Rugby World Cup in 2003. I often refer to Tasmania as being like both Islands in NZ rolled into one,I love it!

I must admit, on the many times I have been there I have never noticed or felt any threat. although it is something you often see in guide books and reviews, I even know people who won't go to the city because of what they have read. I guess the lower part of Las Ramblas is pretty seedy, and some of the streets in the old bit could be threatening especially at night, but then again I avoid places like that everywhere I go.

The underground network is brilliant and very easy to use to get around.

I always thought that but when I was there with my parents, we had just sat down in a cafe when we were distracted and they robbed a backpack that my father had just put down. Thankfully it was a freebie bag with just bottles of water but we did get robbed that trip.

I've travelled most of Europe and Barcelone is rife with stories of pickpockets. German cities are also friendlier than most people give them credit for!
