I dislike the idea of pulling a sickie.
Checked my diary, did an hour of phone calls and have taken a day of holiday at short notice. Not always possible but today it was , and feels miles better to me than lying.
Hey, I didn't actually take a sickie (and never have) but I think it would be fair to say that some days I have stayed at home when physically I could have gone in because I wouldn't have been very effective and there was nothing pressing at work and equally other days when I have gone in despite barely being able to stand up/walk in a straight line because there were important work things to do. Knowing my luck I will succumb properly to the bug that is going round in the week I have off between xmas and new yearI think....0 -
It's a great piece of advertising but it also makes me think that Thanksgiving is the better holiday: a meal with family, no gifts given nor expected. No disappointment because you only got the iPhone 8x rather than the 9y.0

2 distinct/absolute parking spaces off road in the front garden; side entrance to rear garden that gets the sun. Separate kitchen and lounge (bit of a nuisance/stairs between them).
On for £170k.
So now I am too scared of it as it's so much cheaper than the original sold land registry price, two others have also been for sale in the last year, not showing as sold on LR, so I am wondering if they're all rented out ..... not much arson/sexual assault/robbery/burglary in the area, but the rear garden could do with beefing up re security as the fence backs onto a parking area.
Budget would leave cash for a small shed and frugal conservatory (£3-4k)
Pylons? Murder scene?
I thought a garage was a non-negotiable?I think....0 -

I've never had two weeks off work as holiday time. Yes, I've had lots of time not working, but that's not the same as holiday because you've not got the income any more0 -

I think sometimes sickies are probably 'mental health days'. The less in control one is of ones work schedule the more those mental health days probably come into play tbh.
I think that when one considers the huge morale boost that the extra bank holidays for things like jubilee gave to people one appreciates how important time, rather than extra money, can be.
DH is hoping to have two uninterrupted weeks off over Christmas. This will be almost unprecedented and was only given a tentative go ahead this week. I think he'll sleep through three of them, because all that time seems incredible. :j:j:j
It wasn't a judgement and the limitations of my discretion are understood - it would be very difficult for someone working on a hospital ward or in retail customer service to do what I did today. However it could be done more than it is..if only people felt able to discuss it.
There is a lot of research that links meaningful work, healthy team values and some discretion at work with a positive staff experience.
One of the things I dislike about the idea of sickies is for the reason micheals gave....that he then feels he has to go in when he is really ill. This brings with it infection control issues, presenteeism and diminished quality. I know it is used as an arguement to undermine why paid sick leave is a reasonable and sensible employment benefit in a first world employer as employers suspect it of being abused.
Years ago I was advised to fib when I had a child care related absence, I prefered to tell the truth and alongside others work to change the employer attitude and practice including building workplace nurseries, emergency creches and holiday play schemes.
I think you have to speak truth to power to infuence changes in employment.0 -
Just been to get my mail, just one today. From HMRC.... heart's racing when I get those. It's just a Self Assessment Statement .... bottom line says £0 though, so all's good.
So much to'ing and fro'ing of you pay them, they pay you back, you get random letters saying you owe money, then statements saying you don't..... but, I don't. So all's well0 -

I think in some cases you speak the truth and head the redundancy list.
Its really great in ideal. I think in practise in many environments its far harder to put into practice. E.g. Whether DH gets his two weeks we'll see durin the two weeks. Its no way to relax really. Knowing they can call on you at any time. ATM the likely hood is not small because his department is understaffed, severely, and though they are saying they are trying to recruit, no one new is joining. The latest person left because......of overwork! So now DH will be more overworked as his work load is divided out....0 -

micheals I read that you felt like it but were going in.
My action was to feel like I wanted to take an unplanned day off too today, and was able to organise it. Sorry if you felt judged it was not meant that way.0 -
Oooh, FC - that dress is gorgeous! The ones posted yesterday were also v nice but I could never ever have worn them ever. That one on the other hand, with some serious diet and exercise...
Edit: this its the dress I wore last week to my work xmas party. It was a bridesmaids dress from last yr: http://www.jjshouse.com/A-Line-Princess-One-Shoulder-Floor-Length-Chiffon-Bridesmaid-Dress-With-Ruffle-007004153-g4153
If you can wear something as lovely as that, I see no reason why you couldn't glam yourself in one of fc's creations?:)It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0
