We (ie the British) appear to have imported names for meat, so we don't refer to meat as the animal. So sheep becomes mutton (mouton), cow becomes beef (bouef), pig (porc) and so on. I think we're quite unique in that, but await a rash of replies correcting my assumption.

Thought to be one of the consequences of the Norman Conquest.

Saxons looked after the animals, so called them Saxon AKA Germanic names. Normans ate them, and the meat got called French names.

People didn't much eat chickens or lambs then, which is why they have the same names for both animal and meat.

  • Almond milk is delicious, a drink in its own right, but tastes different in the UK. It has a tiny percentage of nut in it here. Sweetened and with a decent nut percentage its like drinking marzipan :D. (Obviously not a daily indulgence!) Also good with coffee. Likewise hazel nut milk. With tea, IMO both suck.

I've made almond milk, the proper stuff - from a recipe book of Jewish food. Some nice stuff in there (many of the recipes are Middle Eastern Jewish, which OH likes, rather than eastern European Jewish, which he's not so keen on).
    Serious question,.,,

How many nice people still occasionally scrub floors, like on hands and knees? I cannot find any way to clean floors that us better.

Second part of question how many nice men (or women) have NEVER scrubbed a whole floor rather than just a spot clean?

My new steam mop is damn near as good as hands-and-knees scrubbing. But I have done the latter, for a whole floor rather than spots. Not often, though (-:

Which one did you get if you don't mind me asking? Mine's about ten now, so could do with an upgrade.

I've been tricked ... and am annoyed I didn't just say "No".

Saw an OK house - nothing special, but it had walls and a roof etc. Area I am not familiar with, but have heard "it's nice/OK, some nice bits, some not so nice bits" - looked all right on streetview.

So I contacted the agents and they got back to me.... and at first he said he's had 6 views/4 offers, but could squeeze me in. I then said "Nah - don't bother - it's not that great is it".....

I'd said it was cash I had, and he asked if that's real cash and I said "yes", and he said there would be no discounting the price, no offers, and then .... it turns out to be a HA house, with current owner owning half. So now I'm not really into it. He said HA would prefer somebody "to live in it" rather than an investor.... probably EA BS.

So I tried to get out of it again ... and he still persuaded me to look tomorrow.

He said the problem is my budget - at my price they are mostly sold to landlords. The advantage LLs have is they can always go as high as they want, my budget's fixed. I am hearing this over and over and over again from every EA. Houses under £250k are being bought up wholesale in the last few years.

I can't magic more money out of the non existant magic pot .... I do hate BTLers and the way they stop people having a choice of houses.... I just get their leftovers.

Also, if I'd known it was an HA/SO I'd have never contacted agent in the first place

I think this is EA bullsh1t. Landlords are more likely to give themselves a fixed price and not get emotionally attached to a property. If they want to spend X they will spend only X. It is business transaction, so they are not interested in EA talk.

More likely you tell an EA you are paying cash and they think they can get you to afford more by showing you a house you love and persuading you to get a mortgage to go along with the cash.

The only time I think EAs would prefer a landlord is if they also run a letting business, so the EA makes the sale and then gets a letting fee for finding a tenant.

Wise words silver. Pastures, don't go if you don't want to.

Also, I've been thinking about the part of where pastures has been looking that is "the wrong side of the tracks". There are probably still nice streets in that area, but you need ultra local knowledge. You may be able to get something reasonable there if you can tap into where's good and where definitely to avoid. I live in such an enclave myself and it meant I got a good house at a great price in a lovely street, whereas a lot of people would turn their nose up at the neighbourhood.

Nothing has come to market this year where I'd have liked.

I think Lydia's dd might approve of the wall I started last week and have just finished.

Indigo, green, pink and a yellow cream all on the one wall. :) And yet, some how its still very demure.
