I know you guys - and everybody else - find my fears and phobias giggleworthy, but this is the sort of thing that I live my life petrified about.

Now I've a new fear to add, as now I've got a specific component breakdown to add to the list of possibles :)

Glad you're OK Viva.... and that you weren't alone in the middle of the night dealing with it ... and that the nice big men in uniforms found the problem.

    :(

Big hugs ..... you have my EVERY sympathy over how this will affect every waking moment of your thoughts for years to come.

Pastures I am petrified of fire and always have been.. however up until now my fear has always involved open flames. Please don't think I find your fears giggleworthy. However it is worth reflecting on what has happened... I had a very scary night that I wouldn't want to repeat, but my house is still standing, any fire/melting/overheating was contained in the unit, the worst thing is I've got to spent a couple of thousand to upgrade my heating. I've got a bit of a hole in a wall (fillable with plaster for about £5) and a broken clock that got caught in a jacket when a fireman turned round. But nothing at all very bad.

    I've also learned:
It isn't acceptable to put stuff in front of the back door and I need to get rid of a fair bit of clutter (in my defence Christmas presents hadn't found a home yet and it's too cold to use that door, but I've learned a lesson. Always have an escape route and if possible an alternative.

You can never have too many smoke alarms... Even if you do have a hardwired system (like me), there's nothing wrong with installing extras.

That a nice man (or woman) from the fire brigade wants to come round, discuss my fears and make sure that we've done everything we can to mitigate risk - better still there are similar heroes all over the country and you don't need to have a fire to call them out for free. It's well worth speaking to them if you haven't already done so.

That if you smell burning or see smoke, you can get a fire extinguisher or fire blanket, but the best investment is a quick call to 999 and the professionals who know what they are doing. They could not have been more wonderful.

Also in terms of the system, there are now much better alternatives on the market, safety is much greater, and providing I address a few issues that I will be able to feel safe going forward.

Sounds very irritating. Are you of Sri Lankan ethnic origin? Sri Lankans I've known have the most impressively long names I've ever come across.
    .

Very much white english, i'm afraid. My name is the same as a village near blackburn.Always thought i had an ancestor in the middle ages without much imagination.

Pasturesnew, most people have some phobia or fear. I am afraid of dogs. Just normal.

    Balloons.

Not the metallic helium ones (I quite like those), but the type that you blow up yourself. I've been known to cross the road to avoid them before.

Oh, I just thought of another thing that really terrifies me. Its totally irrational, and silly, (yes, sillier than picnic furniture or downward hills) but il'm not going to share it because I know some silly beggar would put it in there avatar or flood the thread with pictures of it or...shudder......

Alastair Campbell (he of politics fame) was on the Danny Baker show on R5L a week ago. He has a phobia about food sauces. it has a proper name but I can't remember what it was (let alone pronounce it!).

I sent Doozer on an urgent mission for Worcestershire Sauce. He's been gone rather a while considering that in theory, it shouldn't be that hard to find in this county. Perhaps it is more difficult than I thought?
