Back then it was easier to get a job to fit. Since these tax credits things came in, the world of work has changed.

People used to usuallyy work certain hours or days. This also meant they could do 2-3 jobs if they wanted as they'd fit together.

Nowadays employers are using the "16 hours/week" criteria for parents/WTC/CTC to have a pool of people they expect to be able to drop everything and fit onto rotas anywhere.... so one part-time job can have hours all over the place.

People used to answer adverts for "Saturday staff wanted" ... not so much/.often these days as some people in the pool of available people will be rota'd on, on demand.

There were, therefore, more "part-time/school hours" and "part-time/term-time only" jobs advertised and available.

My mum decided that the best way to get a term time only job would be to get a job in a school, so that's what she did (as a secretary). It's still a common strategy. She had to do odd days in the holidays on a rota, but could take me with her if absolutely necessary. There were always a few days when her terms (state sector) were longer than mine (independent) but they were usually outside the university terms, so on those days my dad could usually work from home if I couldn't go to a friend.

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

Would lir and fir want to do that? Or would they feel it was putting English tailors out of business?

I can't answer for lir and fir but it's a different value proposition that UK tailors can't compete with.

Another argument is that it opens up the bespoke tailoring market to people who wouldn't otherwise be able to afford it (not suggesting fir falls into this category) who would otherwise buy off the peg. Then as they appreciate made to measure seek out bespoke here and move up in terms of wants.

There were probably more school office/similar jobs back then too. Computerisation has reduced staff headcounts.

Survived it, rather than managed it. We couldn't do the clubs and / or childminder thing, it would be too risky, and far too chaotic.

I can imagine, just from having heard a few stories of your work!

I know a couple in which he's in sales - some work from home and some travelling - and she's a nurse - mostly fixed hours community nursing but also some bank shifts at the hospital. Mostly they manage to work round each other so they can manage the before/after school stuff, but every so often it goes wrong and she has a late finish when he's travelling, or something. I couldn't cope with that. I find it hard enough finding people to look after my kids when I'm doing parents' evenings etc.

We often find it difficult to recruit Saturday staff. I don't really know why. The Job is more interesting (imo) and often better paid than retail. It's perfect for anyone who studies during the week.

There were probably more school office/similar jobs back then too. Computerisation has reduced staff headcounts.

But there's more paperwork needing to be done now. DD's school has 2 full time office staff for a school of 200. My mum was one of 5 office staff in a school of over 1000. I'm not sure how many DS's school has. And there are loads of TA jobs now that didn't exist back in those days.

Still, clearly not all parents of school age kids can get jobs in schools. So it's not going to be the solution for everybody. And yes, outside of education, there is a big problem with part time jobs not having fixed hours. Within education, most part time jobs are fixed hours for a year at a time, but come September each year, everything changes. Mine is like that, but they generally try to be as helpful as they can about fitting my hours round my limitations. (DD only has an after school club place three days a week, so they don't timetable me in the afternoon on the other two days, for example.)

Yeah, teachers had to teach a class of 30-40 alone back then.

Canteen work used to be a place for a lot of them.... they were school hours/term time only jobs.

Also, small/local shops back then used to be open "regular hours", so 9-5ish ....

There used to be jobs of 11-2, covering people's lunches in a lot of jobs too

DH usually buys a particular suit maker off the peg and it fits well. Its the only off the peg he has found that do fit him well, being not English shape but liking proper old fashion English fitted suits not the [STRIKE]sacks[/STRIKE]suits so e other nations prefer. ATM he has sacks. :rotfl: Tk max happens to get lots of those suits in. One of those ' we make in Asia' suit makers went round the office not that long ago and was saying that dh's suit was really nice( woah...showing how much DH has lost quickly again I guess:( ) and but they could do it cheaper, because it was 'obviously' a four figure suit. It wasn't it was tk Maxx, but at that pointed fitted :o. Any way, was cheaper than theirs.

DH needs to stabilise before considering bespoke anything, I think!

I noticed this week that OH is losing weight. He never looks plump. He is 6'2 " , a 42" chest and a 34 waist at the moment. He was 36".

He assures me he is fine and wanted to lose a few pounds. He has been for a run yesterday and today and played tennis Thurs.

I thought he appeared to age, his face looks an bit more lived in and I felt concerned.
