Not sure if right area as first post. Can admin please move to correct area if not.

Just wanted others to be aware of Argos and what, in my opinion, is a bit of a scam with their gift vouchers.

In August bought some things from Argos and got their £10 gift voucher. At the time I did say to the assistant that that'd come in handy for Xmas. No mention was made of any expiry date.

Came to use it last night at Argos in Meadowhall, Sheffield. Told it had expired. Now on the back there is what can be taken as a date. I must admit I didn't really examine the back. However, there is a black rectangle obscuring any indication that this might be an expiry date.

So I'm curious as if any consumer laws have been broken. Given I was not informed of an expiry date and the card itself goes out of it's way to obscure any expiry date. The terms and conditions text makes no mention of any expiry date. Where do I stand?

I do not have access to a scanner so I tried to attach picture of back of card. However, as new user link to picture not allowed.

I am most annoyed (that's putting it politely) with Argos. Appears they deliberately run this scam so they don't have to honour the vouchers. Not what I would expect from a responsible, decent company. I guess they're not then.

No scam here, IMO you should have asked about expiry dates.

Happened to me too, except my card didn't have a date on it at all. Got told that it expires after 2 weeks and that the expiry date is printed on the receipt of the item you've purchased. Wasn't happy as two weeks is a bit pathetic imo.
There's a storm coming, Mr Johnson. You and your friends better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you're all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.

Because vouchers often have expiry dates and if it is not clear then asking would avoid problems like the OP had.
loose does not rhyme with choose but lose does and is the word you meant to write.

The promotional ones often have short dates, the ones you buy are much longer - I was given some valid to 2018 although not as good as Amazon which now have 10 years on them.

You weren't vigilant enough, you didn't read the t&c, all vouchers have T&c s on them,

No scam there, it's your fault, not Argos.

People are far to quick to use the word SCAM/

    Really?

Should you also have asked if the gift card will burst into flames after 30 minutes in your pocket? And if you don't, it's your fault that your bits get burnt because you didn't ask?

Thankfully the law has a bit more common sense than that. Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations section 6 - Misleading Omissions.

... commercial practice is a misleading omission if ...
(a)the commercial practice omits material information,.
(b)the commercial practice hides material information,.
(c)the commercial practice provides material information in a manner which is unclear, unintelligible, ambiguous or untimely ...

By not making the expiry date clear Argos have committed an offence. I'd suggest writing to them, enclosing the unusable gift card and pointing this out.

OP states "there is a black rectangle obscuring any indication that this might be an expiry date." Perhaps you weren't vigilant enough to have read that.

    See my previous reply.

The fact is that the date printed is unclear that it is an expiry date.

I have purchased gift vouchers before and had no problem with expiry dates, as any have been far in the future as previous post above. So based on this previous experience I would not have reasonably expected a gift voucher to have a built in small time period to use.

I hope that clarifies. There was a date on the back. This could not be identified as expiry date. T&Cs makes no mention of expiry date. All would be clear if I could post picture. Please don't hurt yourself when getting off your high horse.

Not if the expiry was printed on the original receipt, as is suggested here that it was.
