  • Hi Mrs PG

I have a relative who can be quite demanding but there are two things that I have realised over the last couple of years...

    1) the more time I spend with them, the more they expect it

    2) no matter how much time I spend with them, it is never enough

...so I have cut back on the amount of time that I spend with this person.

They still ask me every time I talk to them when I will be over next but nowadays instead of saying "I will try and get over soon" and then having to schedule something in sooner than I would like, I am honest and just say "not at the moment" or "I don't know" and then arrange something when it suits me.

At first, I felt a bit guilty because it took them a while to get used to it but now they seem to have calmed down and accepted it and have become less dependent on my visits.

I think that this is something you are going to have to deal with sooner rather than later or your health is really going to suffer and then you'll be no good to anyone but I know it's easier said than done when the guilt kicks in. Maybe ask yourself "do I really want to put up with this for another year or two years or five years?".

    Good luck and hugs!

This is pretty much what I do. Every time I speak to her she moans that I haven't spoken to her for ages, regardless of whether we spoke a couple of days before or after a few weeks. She also asks when I'm next coming to visit.

When I go to visit she moans about not seeing me for ages, regardless of when I last saw her.

She even told complete strangers last time I visited that she hadn't seen me for months, despite knowing this was because I'd been in recovery after an operation.

When I do see/phone her some sort of vitriol will come out of her mouth

As Dolphin says the more you do, the more is expected.

Anyway, I'm hoping something great happens to you today

dear PG, I haven't been on here much so didn't realise how bad things are for you at the moment. I can say I empathise with you as I have gone through very similar situation and see my friends suffering the same. It is probably an exaggeration of her already unpleasant personality caused by age.

And the VAT fine too that is awful. I know you are always prepared for it . I would go and see the doctor and see what help you can get there, maybe find a visiting service so someone else visits too. My mum was like that when she was dying, she kept phoning all the time and wanted me to be there and to run around after her. I had four small children and a sick husband. It was a very very difficult time..

  • Oh PG! I'm really sorry to hear about the late vat fine that's not what you need right now. I think you need to start switching your phone off...or just block her number? Or is that a little too harsh ;)

I had a friend who phoned me 10times a day. I blocked her number for a while for our sanity. We did unblock her after a while.
