  • re the carrots - I like them best steamed (I just use a colander over a saucepan and then the saucepan lid on top of the colander, no need to buy a steamer), anyway not too long (5 or 10 mins depending on size?) so that they still have a bit of crunch and then I put a tiny bit of butter on them, salt, pepper and chopped fresh coriander (from the herb bag) - delicious! :) When it starts getting colder I will probably make carrot and coriander soup.

I get farm eggs too, but only every 2nd week as it's just me - they make the best omelettes I have ever had - if this is what eggs from your own chickens taste like I want some chickens! (not yet though, I live in a top floor flat) :)

  • Hi

Your fruit and veg boxes sound lovely, but they seem so expensive, especially when your on a limited budget. I buy fresh fruit and veg weekly from the green grocers/lidls. I always wash them before eating though(dont know if this makes a difference!). Normally buy apples, bananas, pears, potatoes, carrots, onions, leeks, kiwis, cabbage and cauliflower each week. I probably spend about £5 a week.

Maybe when next year when we have more funds available :D

I think I'm very lucky with mine, Penny-Pincher - £7.50, delivered, with the organic free range eggs every time, for which I was paying £1.35 in my health food shop anyway. Take the shop cost of those off, and the veg (7 types) comes to £6.15. I don't think I could buy the same, organic, in Tesco, for that little. And then having it delivered to my door. It's amazing! I think it must be one of the best value schemes in the country. They also offer organic wild boar! Not too tempting for a veggie, but my boyfriend might be tempted! Also, the option of having it fortnightly is great. Means I can supplement it on the off weeks with the odd thing, but I don't have to struggle to use more than I can eat.

Mine is just a fiver. Nothing fancy, good value, and again has the fortnightly option which works out just fine for me.

    A recent one was:-

    3 small onions
    6 small carrots
    500g broad beans in pods
    {No potatoes this week for some reason}
Large bag of assorted lettuce leaves
    5 big sticks rhubarb
    2 pears
    500g strawberries

Delivered to my door for a fiver.

  • No curly kale this week! :)

    Mine from today:

    Veg:
    Large bag potatoes
    Bag of onions
    Large cauliflower
Large bag of mixed green salad leaves (+flower) :)
    Large lettuce
    Bag of tomatoes
    Bag of carrots
    Bag of mushrooms
    3 courgettes
    1 cucumber
    bag of broad beans
    Fruit:
    Bag of plums
    Bag of apples
    Bag of pears
    Bunch of bananas
+ Large Bag of mixed herbs (parsley, red basil, coriander, chives, etc) £1 extra

Still deciding wether or not to downgrade to the £5 veg box from the £10 one, as from last week I didn't get to use the bag of green salad leaves or the onions or the potatoes or the apples! (Although they will all keep except the salad)

I'd love to order these organic boxes but my cooking skills are so underdeveloped that I wouldn't know what to do with half of the ingredients in the box! As someone who works long hours and lives alone I try to take care of my diet and would love the organic stuff - but because of the randomness of the box it could end up defeating the object.

Or does someone know of a decent place with recipes?

Just type the veg into the BBC search and it will find recipes:
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/

Eat the Seasons is good too:
    http://www.eattheseasons.co.uk/
(Just click on a veg [if it's a link] and it will give you cooking and preparation info and recipes)

Are you veggie? Because for a lot of the stuff in my box I just have the veg as part of a fish and 2 veg (or salad) or meat and 2 veg (or salad) meal.

A good basic cookbook will give you cooking times for most veg.

Sophie Grigson's vegetable book is helpful too.

And then of course there are our Recipes in the Indexed Collections - follow the link in the Blue Bar at the top of the page - and also the Cooking section of the MEGA Index sticky at the top of the Old Style listing which, apart from our recipes, contains links to lots other sites where you can type in some ingredients and get meal suggestions.

Finally - if you're really stuck - just post and ask for an idea :)
