I wondered whether anyone would like to keep this thread going regularly? I've just started my box scheme again, and was thrilled with yesterday's delivery. I've read back over this thread, and I think a weekly sharing of what people are receiving would be great, nice to compare, and really give a feeling to the list of what's in season as we go through the year.

This week I had (for £7.50 delivered)

    1kg potatoes (every week)
    500g Onions (every week)
    500g Carrots (every week)
    1 lettuce
    huge bag of kale
two huge and one small courgette
one large and one small cucumber
6 free range organic eggs (every week, provided the hens have laid enough!)

I'm delighted. The farm is local to me (20 minutes drive), and they grow over 90 different vegetables, apparently! For £10.50 you can have fruit as well, or for £13 you can phone through a specific order.

I'm getting my box fortnightly to start with (though will miss a couple when they're on holiday in September), as it's just me most of the time.

What's everyone else got this week?

Hi Loadsabob! You got a bargain box there, I am very impressed. Glad to see this started again! In my box this week I have:-

    Fennel
    New Potatoes 1kg
    Red Cabbage
    Onions (6 large)
    1 butternut squash
    1 green pepper
    5 pears
    4 large oranges

This costs me £9.50 weekly, only trouble is the produce doesn't last very long so I have to think of ways to use it quickly. This week will be butternut squash soup (if I can find the recipe:rolleyes:), oven roasted mediterranean vegetables (using up the fennel, some of the potatoes, onions and some courgettes and tomatoes from the garden) got the recipe on here - so thank you to the poster! Just need to think about what to do with the red cabbage, last time I did red cabbage and apples which was lovely. Had a nice fruit salad yesterday as the pears were a bit squashy!

Hi Catznine! Sounds lovely! When I had red cabbage and beetroot once, I made borscht, which was quite nice. Although, I made loads, froze some for about a year then gave up on it - NOT the model OS-citizen! My brother had fennel in his box this week, he baked it in wine and had with fish pie! He also had kale last week and wasn't sure what it was! It's a great way of learning more about veg, isn't it?

Yum - I like hearing what other people are getting, it's like Christmas every time!

    Red Cabbage

I love Nigella Lawson's book Feast. It has the ham in coca-cola recipe that i'd often heard about - and it's lovely - and it suggests using the leftover coke with some water to cook red cabbage. It makes it a little sweet, and is lovely!

It certainly is getting me to be braver about trying different veg! The fennel in wine sounds lovely! I have to admit to getting quite excited the day my box is delivered as you never know for certain what it will contain and yes it is like Christmas! :D

I've got into the habit of having a cook-in within a day or two of my box arriving - then freezing the extras. This doesn't work for the salad things of course, and sometimes the fruits - but my fridge usually keeps both well for a week, and by then, feast or famine :) I've eaten them all.

My dd loves making the ham in coca-cola, it's lovely but she uses honey instead of treacle for the glaze as it is sweeter. I will have to remember that idea for the red cabbage, thank you! :T

  • My box was similar to the one loadsabob got (different supplier though, mine is a farm in East Lothian, Scotland)

    potatoes (every week)
    Onions (every week)
    Carrots (every week)
    1 lettuce (every week)
    4 tomatoes
huge bag of curly kale (as identified on here!) :)
large bag of mixed green salad leaves (and a small flower!)
    small bag of mushrooms
    a cauliflower
one huge and one small courgette
    one large cucumber
    4 apples (2 different varieties)
    4 pears
    bag of plums
    bunch of bananas
    +
huge round granary loaf (optional extra £1.85)
bag of mixed herbs (parsley, coriander, sage, chives, etc) this is an optional extra for a £1

The veg box is £10 and £5 for the fruit box. Must admit this is the first time (in 6 weeks) where I have had something I didn't like (purple curly kale and not crazy about pears but will juice them with the apples) and the box scheme has made me try some veg I wouldn't have normally (roast beetroot, patty pans, etc). Plus the carrots are the best I have tasted since growing our own in the garden when we were kids, not normally a big carrot fan though raw is okay, but these I will happily eat evey day. :)

I have a mixed fruit and veg box for £13. This week I got:

    Potatoes
    Carrots
    Chard
    Onions
    Beetroot
    Runner Beans
    Courgette
    Cucumber

    Pears
    Apples
    Bananas
    Plums
    Lemon
    Oranges

Don't know what I'm going to do with all the runner beans 'cus I've got a load growing in the garden!

Competitionscafe, wow what a great selection! Nice to have the herbs and bread options, too! I'm having second thoughts about whether my kale is kale - I cooked some last night, in a cumin-chick pea type thing, and it was gorgeous, but more cabbagey than kaley...either way, it's yummy! It's not like the kale I've grown, though that's really curly...perhaps this is big tall curly cabbage!

Yes, I like having tasty carots. I tend not to eat them cooked, either, but raw is fine, grated in salads, or as sticks. I did have one sliced and cooked with peas, cottage pie and gravy a while back - took me right back to my childhood!

Yoga Girl, I guess it goes without saying to freeze the runner beans. I suppose with loads in the garden, you only have so much space in the freezer!...
