Best stay in doors for the rest of your life if you live in the UK, or USA, or anywhere in Europe, or the world in fact.
Batton down the hatches peeps. Rapists are coming!
The poster is merely reporting news that has appeared in a number of national newspapers and is consistent with Foreign Office warnings of a rise in cases of sexual assault against Britons in Egypt since the Arab Spring uprisings of 2011, including in hotels.
The MSE Travel forums are exactly the right places for this sort of news to be reported to give anyone considering a holiday in Egypt to be fully aware of all the facts before they consider going.
I suspect you would be less flippant if you had a wife or daughter involved in such an awful experience.0 -

You have a clear disdain for Arab countries.
Do people get raped in Egypt? Sadly yes, but they also get raped in every other country on earth.
Egypt is a country that rests very heavily on tourism, places such as Aswan, Luxor, Giza, HGH and Sharm all exist purely for tourism. Without it you drive families into poverty.
The MSE forums for most people are to advise of what to do, where to go and how to get there. But sadly some people like yourself use these forums as arenas of scare mongering aimed at countries you have a particular dislike of.
But look at these facts:
In 2012 the FCO dealt with 6 cases of rape, whereas estimates say that at any one time there are 40,000 British in Egypt.
In the UK in 2012 there were 69,000 rapes reported.
However skewed those statistics are one thing is certain - You are more likely to get raped in the UK than in Egypt. And not just by a little bit, but massively more.0 -

The FCO advice on crime and security in Egypt.
Reports of cases of sexual assault against British nationals have increased during and since the unrest of early 2011. In 2012, the FCO handled 23 cases of sexual assault and 6 cases of rape. Some assaults were against minors. Many occurred in what were considered to be safe places such as hotels.
The most recent rape incident against a British woman last week involved a security guard at a hotel in Sharm. These are facts, not scare-mongering.Far from having disdain for Arab countries I have travelled and worked in them extensively.Even with that experience I would take FCO advice extremely seriously and certainly more than from a " expert " with opinions garnered from two weeks on a sunbed drinking pina coladas.0 -
I realise im digressing somewhat but its a current topic and i was somewhat shocked to realise that it is only recently that Egypt made female genital mutilation illegal and yet it is still practised illegally and is widespread in Egypt...awful. According to UNICEF 45million women in Egypt over aged 15 had experienced FGM.Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0

I would say things are most definitely not better.

So you just copied and pasted exactly what I posted?
I recommend anyone traveling to Egypt or any country for that matter seeks the advice of the FCO. And, in the case of Egypt they will notice that travel to:
Cairo
Aswan
Luxor
Hurghada
Sharm
Dahab
Siwah
Are all safe.
People would do well to ignore you and anyone else that tries to be an expert on something they have no clue about.0 -

Mmm, Cairo looks a really safe place to be - - not!

This week, around 500 people have been sentenced to death in Egypt, and the friends and relatives of those poor souls will be blaming the West for their predicament.0 -
That was an anniversary 3 months ago, it was expected to kick off.
Current FCO advice deems it safe for travel. You can either follow the advice of the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office - or you can pull up an old news article and judge for yourself some 2000 miles away.
Personally I'll follow FCO advice.0 -
Mr Wang
I think terror is a growing threat in Sharm as all other tourist places in Egypt
Sinai has some real lock down problems that even Israel's security forces struggle to deal with . Egypts security forces are not up to the game.
It has become apparent to anyone who opposes the present leadership that financial pain can be caused very easily through making foreigners afraid to visit..I will be honest I am waiting for someone to fire something at a ship going through the Suez canal as that is where one third of Egypt's cash comes from.
Egypt is haemorrhaging and is presently being bailed out by gulf states that do not want the Brotherhood in power ..This does not bode well for the innocent holidaymaker in the middle.
I went to Sharm (Nabq Bay) last year, in September and it felt a bit creepy at times ..Not enough tourists around and walking past groups of labourers sat in groups in the middle of dark roads with closed hotels was unnerving for a guy with a his wife ..I mentioned a few times a couple of women would have felt it worse.
Would I go back ..nah ..It is not a case of if but when ..the place is a soft target ..Also there is a kind of deeper thing that got under my skin.
Sharm is not real ..The English sea side may not be your cup of tea ..but it is genuine ..
Sharm is not Egyptian ..It is not really what Egyptians want. It is manufactured .. I am not a fan of Disney land either ..Maybe that is what I felt.0 -

No, I copied and pasted from the FCO website as you omitted the rather important details about 23 sexual assaults in 2012, some against minors and carried out on hotel property. All rather relevant information to anyone planning a holiday in Eygpt wouldn't you think ? Unfortunatley more up-to-date figures are not yet available but I'd be surprised if they didn't reflect a worsening situation in Egypt.
As for the areas you claim are safe it would appear that many tourists, not just those from the UK, prefer to use their instinct which tells them they are not.
But if you visit all these places regularly I'd be interested to hear of your first-hand knowledge.0
