That advice is specifically worse than what was on the FCO in 2013 as it no longer includes connecting roads to resorts and St Catherine's Monastery. I was in Egypt in January and can honestly say that I was not concerned for my safety. However there were security checks and considerable military presence at times.
Personally I think that the situation could deteoriate this year and we are not planning on returning.0 -

The Germans etc pulled out after the problems last summer and did anything happen then in the Red Sea? No.
You are assuming that the other countries intellegence know something which if they did and it was a credible thread, would have been shared with our FCO and they would take action.
That they haven't stopped travel to Sharm suggests the threat was not credible.
And as i said before, it is not a 'cheap' holiday.
I could probably pick up a really cheap deal in the Crimea at the moment but I doubt I'd go there either.
Government security notices exist for a reason and as the previous poster points out they are getting progressively more serious.0 -
But you are missing the point, Government security notices (from our country) don't exist for Sharm on the Sinai or anywhere including the Red Sea, Cairo and the Nile Valley?
The situation is arguably no different now to what it has been in the past. There is always going to be as risk of terrorism in Egypt but sadly this is the case for many countries these days.
Crimea is a little chilly at this time of year i hear...:beer:0 -

Some people like to scare monger. I recently had a lovely holiday in Sharm. Our only restriction was the inability to do the overnight bus excursions to Cairo/Luxor but we were still able to fly to those so be prepared for the added cost, but still well worth it

The advice from the FCO is significantly different to when I was there in January. South Sinai is a no go area EXCEPT for the Sharm el Sheikh perimeter barrier which is basically the airport and resorts. Previously the FCO advised that road links to Taba and St Catherine's Monastery were safe, it no longer does.
I have no doubt that a holiday in Sharm was 'lovely' mine was too. However the situation beyond the resorts is very unstable and quite desperate. There is a significant chance that the situation could deteoriate rapidly.0 -
When Egypt's Prime Minister is warning tourists about terrorism it's a little more than scare-mongering.

We were in Hurghada in December and had a lovely time but to be fair we stayed in our complex. We felt so sorry for them as hotel was only a third full and they are so grateful for your business.
We have Egyptian friends who are from Cairo who went home at Xmas with their kids for one week and they were glad to leave. They said things have got very bad. They told us about a bus being bombed and that car jacking is regular. They are very worried for the future of Egypt.0 -
