Classic case of parents believing their child is the centre of their world so everyone else should think that too. My nieces live close and we don't always attend the parties. A party in a home is not like a paid for sit down meal.
I think you were rude op.0 -

Not sure why a lawyer would have to be called out in the middle of the night, and in the middle of weddings, and weekends away, and why they'd have to be flown halfway around the world in the middle of a holiday
Can't think of any job that would warrant that TBH apart from a spy or a very highly qualified and specialist surgeon, or the leader of a country.
By the way Orkney Star, I saw your post after the edit - thank you.0 -
I know a solicitor that regularly gets calls in the middle of the night if she's "on call". Service personnel can be called back from holiday including if it's abroad if needed.0

Maybe depends on the type of lawyer? Not sure.Ermutigung wirkt immer besser als Verurteilung.
Encouragement always works better than judgement.0 -
What are you? A spy???!
He'd tell you, but he'd have to kill you.........Not sure why a lawyer would have to be called out in the middle of the night, and in the middle of weddings, and weekends away, and why they'd have to be flown halfway around the world in the middle of a holiday
I do quite a bit middle-of-the-night and weekend stuff. Emergency injunctions to prevent removal or deportation, emergency detentions at the airport or other port, that sort of thing....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -

LOL :rotfl:
No nothing quite so grand.
I looked after databases and Unix based systems.
It was a job I loved, I would have done it as a hobby but I was fortunate enough to get paid for doing it.
I recently took early retirement at 55 after getting a letter from the bank telling my account was full
I've bought a boat and am currently living on it part time. Once all my land based affairs are in order I'll be living on the boat full time. One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.0 -

I'm a small holder, I work everyday of the year, likewise, at odd hours of the day with no notice if an animal is unwell or one of my business's clients needs me to. Its part of my job, and my job is far from high flying!
I can think of lots of roles which demand that sort of commitment, admittedly, many of them self employed where the person has a commitment to success or standard of service.
people often aren't aware of the impact of some roles.
Because of my husband's job We've been able to take only one holiday as planned, ever. Its a requirement of his employment he is contactable twenty four/ seven, and he works internationally across time zones. That means there is not one day of the year that is thoroughly 'off' for everyone, because not everyone, for example, celebrates cHristmas, or those who do might celebrate on 6th of January. He handles files within span pretty much a twenty four hour time zone, so clients or their representatives might decide they need to discuss something urgently at any time. (Plus those who just think their need is urgent, or those who simply don't care whether its urgent or not, they want to call at a time that suits them!).
Corporate burn out is common because the demands are taxing and the responsibilities are huge. If my husband fails something could fail that not only cost shim job and his clients millions/billions but also the knock on impact on industry/employment etc. the banking crisis was a particularly heavy time for my husband.0 -
Crime lawyers are regularly on police station call over weekends, and if a trial is longer than expected they have to postpone holidays.
My OH is not in law but he also has to travel at short notice if something urgent comes up. That is life, if you are paid well there are downsides.0 -

Not so much as you'd think......certainly lots of areas of law won't have that demand, but surprising ones that would, or it seems they surprise.
There are very different areas of law and even types of lawyer NDG is and my husband is......they still get odd hour demands.
There are many differences in how that works, and how much control they might have and how they exercise it.....but....very different areas, and type of thing they might be expected to do at odd hours of the day.0
