Can anyone demonstrate that for each pound spent, such cars return a better investment than cars half or even a quarter of their price,

You shouldn't look at daily drivers as investments.....if you are talking about investments and cars then you SHOULD be buying anything other than the main stream cars, preferably older ones.
"Dream World" by The B Sharps....describes a lot of the posts in the Loans and Mortgage sections !!!

OP - what would you recommend everyone buy and drive instead then?
  • Sound more like you have a chip on your shoulder. What you running bruv, a FSO Polonez?

:j I once had one o' them . . mate of mine wanted £25 for it but then couldn't find the keys. I said with no keys it's only worth half price - best car I ever had for £12.50:rotfl:

Negitiator - hey fine, live in your moral vacuum.

Bert - no chip, just sadness about the choices some of the people that share this planet with us make.

DTDfanboy - a tent in this country does not represent a reasonable permanent dwelling. Like cars there are perfectly affordable adequate comfortable housing and then there is the housing equivalent of BMWs, Audis etc etc

Have you ever worked in the industry by any chance?

Really not sure what the point is?

I worked in the industry for a very long time for my sins and there are differences between models.

Normally ( not always but normally ) better build quality, better, engineering, thus better reliability. Normally better safety features.

These are not just nice to have but in some case's can save lives, mean you spend less on repair bills, have a better residual value, more comfort.

Can not make up my mind if you have a genuine point to prove or you are just a little bitter about not having one?

With very very few exceptions cars will never be an investment. They will over time depreciate. Some quicker and more server than others but unless you have a very rare or classic it will drop in value.

I still don't understand what the OP wants people to do? He/she clearly knows what would be the best choice for everyone when considering a car, so please help us out - what's the best make of car to get? And why?

Maybe drdog is a skoda dealer or something like that

Uhmm, Skoda's are really good cars, so I think that was a swing and a miss there.

Regarding the original post, his point is totally correct, we should all go out and buy a Dacia, after all, they're only a few grand and you get a brand new car....

OK, stop right there. I've been in a Dacia, I've also driven one. They're !!!!ing woeful cars. Cheap unreliable junk made in Romania by Renault, who aren't exactly the all-dancing all-singing representative of reliability are they? Sure, you'll get a brand new car for £5,000 and you'll probably !!!! away a !!!! load more towing it home when it brakes down as you drive it away from the dealers. Along with that, have you ever actually sat in a Dacia? The seats are dreadful, the ride height is all wrong and the dashboard is so plastic fantastic I imagine you can smell it in summer when it warms up. Don't get me started on the engine and gearbox...

I own a Volkswagen Lupo SDI, a V Reg, so not a fancy Volvo or BMW. It does upwards of 70MPG, it's incredibly reliable (I smash well over 20k miles a year on it, I'm now up to 110k miles) is cheap to repair and has a great interior, in my opinion. It even came with electric windows and central locking and a radio... wow, high tech eh? You don't get that with a Dacia... Does the Dacia even have windows? The point is, you don't have to ignore 'big' brand cars like Volvo or BMW, if you consider routing the second hand market. I could have had a 2002 3 series for just over £1000, which is a hell of a lot of car for the money.

    I've been Money Tipped!
    My money = my choice.

I LOVE my car... I enjoy it and it is not economical or eco friendly - hey ho...

People like the OP offset my over-indulgences and for this I am very grateful.
