Take that article with a pinch of salt, and HUGE pinch:
Family car - they suggest a 3-door Golf over a 5-door Qashqai. First thing I did when my wife was expecting was to ditch her 3-door car for a 5-door.
Large family car - Of course the petrol Insignia will cost more to run than a diesel BMW. How about they compare the diesel Insignia for a fair comparison.
Off-roader - 4WD Freelander vs. 2WD Kuga. Should have titled that column Soft-rosder.
I missed what they based the insurance costs on, but I'll 100% state that no single person will be quoted the same amount of insurance on all of those vehicles.0 -

Can anyone demonstrate that for each pound spent, such cars return a better investment than cars half or even a quarter of their price, or are they purely for moral vacuums
Moral vacuums?
I just bought a C63 last month, new, from Mercedes, and absolutely love it. There is no question in my mind that right now, this is absolutely the best car for me.
At other times, cheaper cars were the right choice, and at yet other times, I had far more expensive cars. The "right" car depends on what you want, and what you can afford, but you are a fool if you think that you can objectively state that my choice is "wrong".0 -
