Negitiator - hey fine, live in your moral vacuum.
Bert - no chip, just sadness about the choices some of the people that share this planet with us make.
DTDfanboy - a tent in this country does not represent a reasonable permanent dwelling. Like cars there are perfectly affordable adequate comfortable housing and then there is the housing equivalent of BMWs, Audis etc etc
Well said, im glad my range rover isnt made by the companies listed above.0 -

That's a poor bit of journalism - a 1.6 Diesel BMW vs a 1.8i Petrol Insignia is bound to lead to a fuel saving; and a vehicle duty saving.
They also comment on depreciation as almost supporting a BMW purchase, but it loses £2,750 more than the Insignia.
It's not really a "quality" vs "budget" brand comparison.
Essentially it makes all the same type of mistakes as the OP does in trying to assess cars on a MSE methodology.
The article doesn't compare like with like ; the OP thinks that price is the only consideration.0 -
Financing the extra £8k to buy the BMW seems to have been glossed over (aka forgotten).0

The other common argument is that no-one should waste money on a new car.
So Brain of Britain. Where do all the second hand cars come from if no-one buys new?The man without a signature.0 -
I had a BMW 318i and it was pants. Sold it after 6 months, electrically, not the best but apart from that cheap enough to run. You can get the BMW value services for older cars so even dealer history isn't too hard to keep up and of course they hold their value well.
Before that I had a C-Class which was amazingly cheap to run. So cheap in fact I went for a bangernomics C200 once I chucked the BMW and it performed superbly. Older Mercs are good for that sort of thing. Chain driven motors that will do 200,000 miles plus with minimal servicing.
I get your point OP but it is badly informed. What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?0 -
No one needs to go on nights out, no one needs to watch TV, no one needs to buy nice clothes, no one needs to a buy a house.
I've done it because "I'M CONSIDERABLYYYYY RICHER THAN YOOOWWWW!!!!!"

Oh, and if you can find better value for money than this, i'd love to know. Only problem is the 12 week wait

BMW 330d M sport, on lease for £306 a month inc vat 6+23.
Considering my IQ was £200 a month for 3 years on PCP, this is cracking value.0 -
There seems to be a Troll competition on MSE at the moment - the Troll who hates Aldi (the credit card saga) and this one (the same?).
Are we all that bored with life that we have to respond or is MSE becoming a mature version of Facebook.
The credit card saga was the longest and saddest Troll thread MSE has ever seen - here we go!0 -

Absolutely, and I did aswell.
Didn't buy new, bought just under two years old with above average miles for less than half of the new price.
Very MSE0 -

I agree. I read it in the Sunday Times yesterday too and that was my first thought.
Also, the depreciation is based on list price and I rather think that there may be more of a discount to be had on a new petrol Insignia than a diesel BMW.0
