  • Rather than look at the negatives search for the positives. There are local people with the same interests. Go to the club and meet them. You don't have to fit in with everyone. A few acquaintances with the same hobby will give you a life outside work.
  • The other group is 00 and I love N

I would love to join them, I emailed the administrators to see if I can join
  • I'm sure there will be a train group you can join or help at somewhere, just keep looking. If not how about starting your own?

There is nothing wrong with spending Christmas alone. It's a lot of hype and NOTHING like the ads!

Have you tried asking if you can volunteer at the local hospital or if you have a local community facebook page, perhaps you could offer on there?
  • I have to admit people in work think I'm anti-christmas; the truth is I'm completely the opposite but what I refuse to buy into is the fake lets all get along and be friends even though for the next 364 days we'll hate each other/ spending vast sums of money on stuff none of us need etc.

In fact OH and I have spent tonight wondering should we go for the traditional christmas dinnner or the mod alternative christmas dinner .....can't decide

what I'm saying OP is if you want to spend the day in your pjs eating chocolate and pizza then spend the day in your pjs eating chocolate and pizza..........do whatever you want to do not what the lemmings do!

  • I'll go back and read the whole thread later but I usually spend xmas day on my own. My parents usually go away for the few days, and I usually have to work. This year, I'm working xmas eve and xmas day nightshifts.

So this year, I'll be sat in bed. Cuppa tea and bacon buttie, sleep until late afternoon. DVD and a nice steak for dinner, then head off to work a little later on.

Personally, its bliss not having to do all the crap that comes with xmas day. I can please myself and have a lazy day whilst everyone else frets about dinner and running about like blue ar5ed flies! :D

OP maybe you can find an event/concert on Christmas eve & Boxing day where you are around people which make the lack of company on Christmas day less noticeable.

Oh !!!!!!. There is nothing wrong with spending the day alone. That is the exact reason why I opt out of the whole holiday. People should not be pressurised into giving gifts, sending time with people the don't like or doing things they don't want to do just because society expects it.

OP - its just another day. The sun will rise (eventually), time will pass, and night will come. Enjoy yourself in your own way. If you want to get a takeaway and a film then do it. How dare anyone dictate what you "should" do with your own time.

Ladyhawk - I wasn't 'dictating' and Simon is obviously distressed about spending the holiday alone. Just because YOU do your own thing doesn't mean Simon WANTS to do it too. He has come on here asking how he can get through the holiday period while being terribly lonely. This can be a very depressing time for lonely people - Just ask the Samaritans what their busiest period is!
and that's a thought Simon - ever thought of volunteering for the Sams or similar 'helpline'?

Firstly, there's nothing wrong with spending the day on your own. In reality, the vast majority of xmas 'hype' is created by companies trying to sell you stuff - it's just another day so spend it however you like. If that's takeaway and a movie then great. If you really don't want to be alone then maybe try some local charities direct. I know animal shelters are normally desperate for people to help out as the animals still need walking/feeding/cleaning etc but a lot of their regular volunteers can't come in. Or maybe see if any local pubs are looking for extra staff over the xmas period - gets you around people and earns some extra money.

In the slightly longer term, it sounds like you aren't happy being on your own so much, so do look into the local clubs. Do you have Meetup or anything similar in your area? You'd be surprised on how many different groups there are so am sure there would be something to suit your interests, or even just a general socialising group to get you out - not everyone is as shallow as it sounds like some of your former friends have been! A lot of my friends have different interests to me but that doesn't mean I would never criticise them for it, just as they wouldn't call me for my interests. I hope you meet some new people who appreciate that x

Simon have you ever considered volunteering at one of the steam railways near by to you. I know model railways are your thing but you'd meet other people with an enthusiasm for trains and no doubt some would be into the model railway side too. Not so much to solve the not much to do at Christmas but more long term. I'd imagine there will be events at some of these over the holiday too so might be something fun to do.
