I did not want to read and run, i would second the voluntary thing or alternativvely places like pubs etc always look for xmas staff - i have had jobs before where i have worked over xmas and the night / day flighs by and is over before you know it0

I'll probably be alone too. I've done it many times before, it doesn't bother me.
Lots of nice food (roast something if I can be arsed cooking, or just lots of nibbly bits - it's the time I really indulge in my slightly shameful love of all things "party" from Iceland, and also cold meats, olives, mozzarella...), some chocolates, and enough alcohol to drown a grown man. My favourite films on DVD ( no TV!).

I go to my mums, we get a takeaway. I don't do fuss at Christmas, I don't have kids, neither does my brother, I see him at Christmas to swap presents, spend a few days with my mum.
Id say, if you want to volunteer at a homeless shelter, do it another time of the year, I worked in homeless projects for a long time and believe it or not Christmas was the most empty time of the year as most people had somewhere to go, even for a few hours
One thing I am going to do in the new year is try and get matched up with a charity where I can befriend an older person, lost my gran 3 years ago and would like to do something.
OP, have a look at the site meet up, it can really help kick start a social life.0 -
I wish I could swap I am doing the big family do this year, I so wish it was just me on my own, a dvd box set, 2 x M&S Trifles and some gin and I would have an amazing xmas day not speaking to a single person.0

Its upsetting seeing the adverts
Switch them off. They sell a totally unrealistic, unachievable image of Xmas. Jeez if people aimed to emulate that kind of experience; show home, happy kids, everyone getting on, table laid for 20+ dinner perfect, snow, carol singers who can sing etc, etc we would all fall way short of it and be dead miserable. There are many of us who are gearing up to enduring large family gatherings, who would give their eye teeth for some solitude, peace and being able to do as we please. The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own, no apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on or blame. The gift is yours - it is an amazing journey - and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins.0 -
Definitely look into volunteering over xmas. If you don't want to be around loadsoffestive people, why not contact an animal rescue and see if they need dog walkers over the holidays. Dogs don't care what day it is, they are just happy to have the company.0

Ive asked the local volunteering agencies and places that usually need volunteers are apparently full.
I just feel bad I won't see a single person from the 24th to the 2nd until I return to work and have to lie that I had an amazing christmas and new year when its just me0 -
TBH I wouldn't mind being on my own for Christmas. I'll be away from my partner (our families are in different countries, so I fly back here to mine, mostly for my Mum's sake) and my parents are split up now so family politics when I come back are terrible. I spend New Year on my own though usually-everyone else goes out and I have no friends-and don't mind. Stock up on ice cream, hot chocolate, takeaway/junk food, see what's on TV or iPlayer, let the dog on the couch next to me, get the traditional tin of Roses or Quality Street to eat... as long as I have something sweet and an internet connection it's nice.

Yes - volunteer somewhere, anywhere! its not good to spend the day alone! !
Oh !!!!!!. There is nothing wrong with spending the day alone. That is the exact reason why I opt out of the whole holiday. People should not be pressurised into giving gifts, sending time with people the don't like or doing things they don't want to do just because society expects it.
OP - its just another day. The sun will rise (eventually), time will pass, and night will come. Enjoy yourself in your own way. If you want to get a takeaway and a film then do it. How dare anyone dictate what you "should" do with your own time.Man plans and God laughs...Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry. But by demonstrating that all people cry, laugh, eat, worry and die, it introduces the idea that if we try to understand each other, we may even become friends.0 -
Simonsays, I don't know where abuts you are in the country? I know that you have offered to volunteer, but how about seeing if you can go as a guest? many churches for example do Christmas lunches for people who would otherwise be in their own.0
