Pennib we used to grow corn outdoors on our allotment - used to plant them 9 plants at a time in a diamond shape for maximum pollination, and got absolutely masses of cobs off them - at least 4 or 5 per plant, which far outstripped what we were supposed to get according to the seed packet! :D

I'd say 14 miles for a scamp on a beach was cheap at the price Stripes, nonetheless 45 minutes of doing nothing will do you the world of good! :rotfl:

    Mmmmm.....Tartiflette.....

No, we're still very much on the "Essex" side of the Username at the moment! :D The allotment was when we lived in London - I don't think any plant as tall as a sweetcorn would stand much of a hope up on the islands - even sturdy things like trees give up and lie down pretty fast! :rotfl:

That's what I thought Essex  Being at the top of Scottyland we have to grow 'exotic' stuff in the poly.
  • Ahhh...that might explain the lack of cobs then....Pippi'll confirm or deny but I'm guessing that pollination won't happen as freely as it would in the open air....you might need to think about manually pollinating this year if you're growing them again. (Stripes will come along now and very gently tell me I'm talking rowlocks I expect - the limit of my gardening knowledge is planting a tattie or two really!) :D

Pollination sounds like it might be an issue and they're air pollinated so giving them a wee nudge would help as does planting in blocks like EH suggested - up north the climate and lack of sunshine can be an issue too - but they do well in tunnels if the airflow is good and its not too damp (aside looking like they're trying to escape out of them cos they're so big!) I'll have a peek at my books later - good excuse to get them out.

Lots of organic matter and grub helps too as their hungry boogers.

I'm dashing out to work but will come back and bore you all senseless about my sweetcorn thoughts later

    :)

    Have a good un chaps

And ps - BOB - giggles.

I've managed 7 foot hollyhocks on the north coast - they have to be tied up fairly well though!
