wheelie bin placement issue

A neighbour opposite us came round and asked my husband if he would park his work van in the council estate down the road as he doesn't want to see it from his kitchen window! The snobbery of some people eh.
Nothing wrong with that. It's not snobbery - chavs bring down house prices. Again, you might well be a perfectly respectable family, but the it's the image of white vans that can ruin impressions of the whole area, and if you are trying to sell your house it's obvious that you want the whole area looking as nice as possible. Wouldn't you?0 -
I used to work for Environmental Services at a Council and you would not believe the uproar bins can cause!
The borough never had wheelie bins before, everyone just put bags on out on collection day (which to me is so much worse looking but still) and we had several letters threatening to sue the Council as having wheelie bins at the front of the house would reduce the house value by tens of thousands of pounds apparently.
People were always ringing up complaining about how neighbours had left their bins out in what they felt was an Inappropriate Way - ie not taken back in immediately, not straight up against the wall, kept just outside their back wall even though it was still that person's land etc
And this is excluding the lovely dailymail 'no to bins' campaign that was going on at the time.
So OP, i think you can 'get away with' quite a lot, but for an easy life whatever you do don't in anyway shape or form go against what the older folk think is an appropriate way to behave with your bins.Little Lowe born January 2014 at 36+6

Agreed. They should do what respectable, hard working people do and obtain their money in a more unobtrusive way, like by osmosis or even the odd government hand out.0 -
It's just village life. People care a lot about "their" village and are terrified when anyone new moves in that they're going to ruin it. We have a similar neighbour ourselves - he can be a bit of a pain but generally it's very useful to have someone like him around! Just move the bins - it shows them you're a reasonable person, they'll calm down and you'll be accepted. I know it's irritating, but if deliberately winding him up seems like a good idea to you then you need to question whether you might be happier living in a different sort of environment. (No shame in that - village life isn't for everyone. I think you either see the funny side or you don't!)0

I would not want to be buillied by unknown neighbours. Its got nothing to do with LA and it would get my back up that someone is snitching.
I would put them back where they were and make a stand. Next it will be the state of the garden, coming/going early morning, etc...0 -
Although I'm sympathetic to your position - it does seem highly unreasonable to try to dictate to you in such detail, and to go to the landlady rather than speaking to you directly, but assuming you don't actually want to start a fight now, would it be possible to do anything so you could have the bins where you want them, in the front garden, but that they are less obvious? Possibly a bit of trellis style fence to 'mask' them.
Of course you don't *have* to, but it would then allow you, if the issue is raised again, to explain to the land lady that it isn't convenient for you to have them in the back as you and your children spend time there, but that you have made sure that they are placed somewhere where they are not immediately obvious, and you have done what you can to conceal them. I also don't think it would be unreasonable to ask the land lady who has complained, and why - is she aware that they are not in full view? All posts are my personal opinion, not formal advice Always get proper, professional advice (particularly about anything legal!)0 -
I have had the same scenario happen to me, but I am the LL. My tenants moved in and promptly decided to keep all 3 wheelie bins on the front, by the front door visible to all (they had a small baby so lots of stinky nappies). A few of the neighbours and the local EA mentioned it to my sister who lives locally. I decided not discuss the situation with my tenants, but did talk to the neighbours and confirmed that when these tenants moved out I would make it a clause that the bins must remain at the back. I also do not allow my tenants to have a sky dish or drill the stonework, so if they want my house, they agree to my rules - never had a problem renting it yet0

I am usually a rational person but if this happened to me then I would take the following steps (the list is not exhaustive):
- I would put Christmas lights on the bins and move them right to the front
- I would buy a white vest and spill gravy all over it. I would then wear it every time I went to put rubbish in the bin
- I would buy the rustiest 1980's Ford Transit I could find and park it in my drive
- I would buy a rap cd. I would leave and arrive at my house with my car windows down and rap music playing very loud
- I would add a huuuuuuuuuge satellite dish to the front of the house (wouldn't bother wiring it)
You forgot placing a large trampoline in the front garden :rotfl:0 -

It was either that or the Ford and unfortunately the Ford won on account that I could pretend to keep on loading and unloading it to send further shockwaves through the community. This is a system account and does not represent a real person.
