You don't have to own a house to submit a planning application. Can you find an anonymous ringer to submit an app for a car breaker's yard in the front garden? Almost worth the £250+ fee to see the faces when the consulattion notices arrive?0

Without sounding like I'm siding with the neighbour little things like this can make a mountain out of a molehill. You don't want the neighbours to turn against you or to turn other neighbours against you. It can get very nasty sometimes and you don't want the neighbours to all start to make up lies about you and spread gossip. If you keep your bins at the front then you are saying I couldn't give a toss what you think and this is more likely to be the problem than the bins themselves. They are going to have a negative view of them and you of them.
My advice (and I speak from someone with a neighbour that told me to move my bin) is to gover to the house and speak to the neighbour agree to move the bin and be really really really apologetic. Something along the lines of "oh my god I am so sorry I didn't realise that there was a problem with my bins. But don't feel like you have to go to the letting agents as I'm a reasonable guy and I just feel terrible that you didn't feel you could come and talk to me directly." Be ultra uber nice and over the top then they can't slag you off for being anything. Trust me it helps no one why you atagonise neighbours.0 -
Older people can be easily upset by things that to others seem like small issues. What does it hurt to just comply with their wishes?
Some older people like to assert themselves as it makes them feel more secure about the new (and much younger) arrivals.
These are just bins. It isn't going to lead to further demands and things will settle down.
If you show them respect, they will accept you and you'll probably find they become wise friends.Mornië utulië0 -
Yeah, get 3 more wheelie bins, put some hideous twee stickers on them & mount a Sky dish on a post near the boundary where he can't miss it (doesn't need connecting).
Oooeeerrr I'm an arrogant controlling 60+ .. was it me?
Couple of late night parties - invite him mind...0 -
im not bothered about annoying him, but as he is friends with my landlady who is very loyal to him I believe then I don't have a choice. I have moved them begrudgingly and will just see how it goes. im waiting for the agro ref the cars tho.............. I actually have 2 company cars, but I leave one at the office permanentl, might have to rethink where I park it lol, its taxed, doesn't require an mot and is insured so I could park it on the public road outside and be breaking no laws0

As someone who appears now to count as an older person
I wouldn't dream of interfering with where someone kept their bins, as long as it didn't obstruct the pavement. It has nothing to do with me. Ditto the Sky dish.
I really don't agree with going to make what amounts to a grovelling apology., that might just spur him on to nit pick about other things.0 -
yea I wont be doing that for the same reason. also im not 100% certain its him so don't want to chance it.
I think its absurd but will just get on. if we buy the place however, my flatbed trailer that I store elsewhere will take pride of place on the gravel close to his house (im not joking), I will cancel sky and get it in my wifes name and get the new dish installed on his side, and I will replace the wheelie bins, but only after covering them in tasteless stickers etc0 -

I like your style but I would have thought the time to do all those things was now, when you're renting, rather than when you own the place and getting into a dispute with a neighbour can end up being costly ...0 -
I would agree with letting it go for now - in the great scheme of things it's not hugely significant and you don't want to jeopardise the longer term while you see whether it is definitely somewhere you want to try to buy in a few years.
I am, however, slightly concerned at his assumption that he can dictate where you erect a satellite dish on property that is not his. I'd keep an eye out for any other presumptuous behaviour and - as you say earlier - not become a doormat irrespective of the issue.
As a friend of mine once said (in a completely different context), you pick your battles.0
