Both Emmett and GlynD should be allowed, along with anyone else who wishes to contribute, to continue their discussion openly and frankly.
I believe that part of the problem in NI is this idea that we shouldnt discuss things becuase "someone" might take offence, or its too controversial. We are never going to move forward without discussion
Thank you. You put that very well. Emmett and I might disagree but we don't fall out. Even though it might appear that way. We're just arguing opinions. We are British Citzens as we are ruled by Britain, but we are not British (IMO) because we don't live in Britain, we do live in the United Kingdom though.
It's a pet hate of mine - how can we be British if we don't live in Britain - it doesn't make sense.
We don't have a British passport (despite what we may have to select on various airline websites etc), we ahve a UK passport.
Calling the UK, GB also annoys me, for eg: Team GB in the olympics, its not as if Team UK is longer or harder to say.
The definition of someone who is British is someone who lives in the UK, crown dependencies or overseas territories. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_people I don't like the term GB either and only use it to refer to the geographic area of GB. It used to be worse than that however. In the earlier part of the 20th Century the term England was used to refer to the whole kit and caboodle.0 -

The nationality on the United Kingdom (of Great Britian & Northern Ireland) passport is clearly stated as British, so if you hold that passport then you are defined as British.
Team GB is an abbreviation of Team Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The Daily Mail

I wonder why they don't call it Team UK?0 -

I don't like your nonsense and pot stirring.
I don't care what you like or don't like. It makes no difference to me. From your posts you're coming across as a loyalist bigot as far as I can see and I wish you'd just put me on your ignore list and stop replying to my posts.
Either that or wise up. We don't need any more hatred in this province.0 -
It doesn't sound logical to me. UK is still only two letters. The again I know as much about this kind of thing as my @rse knows about snipe shooting. :rotfl:
I vaguley rememember that our politicians requested that it was changed to team UK but surprisingly that went nowhere - supposedly for marketing purposes Team GB was better.Weight loss challenge, lose 15lb in 6 weeks before Christmas.0 -

I can't see why though. Sorry to ram on about it but Team GB, Team UK. How can that make so much of a difference?
I've found the following on Wikipedia which bears you out but I still can't see why there's so much fuss about it.
The British Olympic Committee has rejected calls for the nickname to be changed to Team UK, arguing that neither Team GB or Team UK are entirely accurate given that neither term covers all the members of its association, and that Team GB is an "effective trading name that fitted best with the Olympic identification of GBR".

It's the difficulty of distinguishing geographical terms from political ones. Someone could equally argue that a resident of Cork is 'British' as they live in the 'British Isles', although that term is in some dispute IIRC.
Personally, I identify primarily with being British (politically) but do not get offended if someone refers to me as Irish.
As for the Team GB stuff, it's always worth remembering that international sport is not politically representative. The Olympians weren't directly representing the UK. They represent the UK Olumpic Committee. It's a small and pedantic point but I'm in a pedantic mood eating my stew
