I'm a democrat Emmett so yes, I do hold all the cards. Your way has failed. PIRA lost the war, there's no united Ireland and there's not going to be for a long, long time, if ever. No Eire Nua.

Where I see you going wrong though is in not accepting the discussion points made with goodwill and peace in mind. You want the unionists to lie down so you can tickle their stomach. It's not going to happen.

I've had the decency to put forward conciliatory points so that I could hear your views on them. All I get back is more complaining and a twisted version of various points in Irish history which bears about as much relation to the truth as my @rse. A tirade of bitterness which would sicken Our Lord Himself. Nothing's good enough for you except total surrender by the unionists.

Time to wake up and smell the coffee is what I say to you. Northern Ireland is British and it will stay British. The best any of us can hope for is federalisation. Which I've already declared support for.

I've also declared support for integrated housing, integrated schools, a possible war memorial for republicans and God knows what else over the last couple of months trying to hold rational discussion with you. Everything I've said has been from the hear, yet you still ramble on, and on, and on.

You could start a fight in an empty house mate.

Just becasue Emmett has admitted he is Republican does not mean he militant and wants to continue with the war.
You can be a peaceful Republican.

You might be of the opinion that there will not be a united Ireland for a long long time, I disagree, we simply don't know what are poeples opinion as there has been no recent vote, and as i have said before I am Catholic and want a united Ireland, but have voted for unionist parties in the past and there is a large number of people who don't vote - so we cannot use election results to decide what way people would vote in a border poll.

I think in the long term a free and united Ireland is the only way to achieve long term peace, there will never be permanent peace in NI the way it is IMO.

And finally, Northern Ireland is not British, it is part of the United Kingdom, but not British. It is also Irish and always will be.

Emmett - Did you really joing a money saving website just to discuss politics? I have a feeling you're just trolling in some attempt to discredit Republicans. Out of your 47 posts at least 40 relate to politics - I don't think this is the site for you.

I have voted for the SDLP in the past. I hear what you're saying too but Emmett has admitted to being militant whereas I am constantly reminding him I'm not even though he keeps telling me I'm a lair.

Oh and no offence but Northern Ireland is British. Part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. If you have a British passport, as I have in the past it says beside "nationality" - British Citizen. In an earlier passport I have it says "British Subject" but they changed that some years ago now. We're no longer subjects it seems.

But British we are. Our assembly answers to Westminster, our block grant is from Westminster, our flag is the British flag. We are democratically British too. Isn't that what all the fuss has been about?

Ok it might change, I grant you that, and I've said before if it does I will then be a loyal citizen of Ireland. I do expect my British identity to be preserved in some way and my British pensions but I've got no problem with being Irish. Nor have I any problem with any citizen in Northern Ireland claiming Irish citizenship now. They're still entitled to the protection of the British state under the 1948 Anglo Irish Agreement and rightly so. Ours is an unusual situation and we should do everything we can to make it work for everyone.

The big question for me is: if I can be that liberal, why can't everyone else? (even if I do shoot prisoners ;) )

That's fair enough but perhaps the debate would be better served via PM or on Slugger O'Toole? For me it's a debate we've had too often on here with the same outcomes.

This forum occupies time for me. I have too much time on my hands. I'm not passionate enough about Ulster or Irish politics to go to Slugger O'Toole.

We had this debate before however and the vote was to keep Northern Ireland related matters on the Northern Ireland thread, moneysaving or not. So I don't see the harm.

Nor do I want anyone ganging up on Emmett. It defeats the entire purpose if he can't speak freely. Even if I don't agree with him.
  • Both Emmett and GlynD should be allowed, along with anyone else who wishes to contribute, to continue their discussion openly and frankly.

I believe that part of the problem in NI is this idea that we shouldnt discuss things becuase "someone" might take offence, or its too controversial. We are never going to move forward without discussion

We are British Citzens as we are ruled by Britain, but we are not British (IMO) because we don't live in Britain, we do live in the United Kingdom though.

It's a pet hate of mine - how can we be British if we don't live in Britain - it doesn't make sense.

We don't have a British passport (despite what we may have to select on various airline websites etc), we ahve a UK passport.

Calling the UK, GB also annoys me, for eg: Team GB in the olympics, its not as if Team UK is longer or harder to say.

Don't talk rubbish. Just because someone posts something you don't like don't accuse them of being a troll. I did vote SDLP. I voted for Seamus Mallon back in the 1990's. It was the last vote I ever cast, because I've never come across another politician who was worth voting for.

If you don't like my honesty put me on your ignore list then you won't see my posts or have to reply to them.
