when they are sat at a computer or maybe their assistant does it. you can have a printed copy with you anywhere to see one on a computer you have to go sit at a computer, log in and find it and can only look at it while at the computer. you people do realise not every job is a job that involves sitting at a computer all day dont you.

Ever heard of smart phones? Pdas? You seem to be getting confused.

The first point is simply incorrect. My email is not published anywhere, but if someone interesting called up asking about a job with me, I'd happily give it to them.

The second point just comes across as an excuse, I'm afraid. A few minutes on the phone with the occasional company whose email address you cannot find is not going to cost very much. Even if it did, though, you need to do whatever it takes to find work. It's your responsibility, and excuses don't change that.
so you give out your email to total strangers over the phone?
if you are spending 35 hours per week doing it the cost will be big. we are not talking about just 2 or 3 per week.
do all you can to get a job? good idea in principal but in the real world....
i have had people here lecturing me that jobseeking neednt cost anything and now i am being told people should phone everyone they apply to. therefore jobseeking isnt an activity that costs nothing.

remember i am talking about spec apps and not apps for an actual vacancy.

As am I. If i get an email from a good candidate, they may well not be right for me, or I may have no opening, so I'll want to forward it. I can do that easily with an email, but not with a hard copy.

Send a hard copy if you like, but always, malware follow it up with an email, with your CV in PDF format.

I have "Good for enterprise" on my iPad, which gives me access to all of my emails, calendar, many documents.

To throw your question back at you, do you think that we walk round with hundreds of CVs in our briefcases?

You seem determined that your way is best, despite many people pointing out that you are wrong, and your way seems not to be working. Don't you think, instead of digging your heels in, that you should consider that you may be wrong on this one?

Er, yes, I just said that I did.

You've basically just accused me of lying now, so I hope that you'll understand if I don't offer you any advice any longer.

There are plenty of people with better manners who I'd prefer to help into a job ahead of you, sorry.

As an employer, I do expect emails, even if a hard copy is also sent. I'm not going to scan and distribute copies, and if somoene is a possible candidate, I will need to share their information.

That is a very good point, something I had not thought of. Thank you for sharing. I am still undecided which is the best way to send spec letters as someone pointed out earlier with the post you can print your CV on nicer paper hoping it will stand out. Are you really saying however good a persons cv was if it was not emailed you wouldn't consider them?

I'm curious, why do you recommend PDF format Bill?
