35 hours a week for Jobsearch, not possible?

35 hours a week is perfectly reasonable to spend job searching - as AP007 says, it's more than clicking "apply for this job"
When I was job searching, I did similar to AP007 and organised my day similar to how I organised my work day. I spend a couple of hours first thing in the morning checking my emails & the "new listings" on the job boards, just as at work I'd be checking my emails, getting updates from colleagues on projects etc.
After that I'd start my "project work" for the day, so maybe one day it would be a complex application form, another day I'd be updating my profiles on various sites or maybe writing letters to local employers. After a short lunch break I'd often do some research work - usually this was researching employers that had vacancies so I could tailor my applications, but maybe one day I'd be researching alternative jobs that I could perhaps move into (I worked in a specialist field at the time) or look at some training courses or make some phone calls or even on the odd occasion take a drive/walk round a local industrial estate and look for the names of companies that I could write to. In the late afternoon I'd go back to applications & review what I'd done in the morning, print things off, double check any emailed applications for grammar/spelling as well as for what the actual advert says eg "send a CV", "write to us detailing why you are suitable for the job", "complete the application form" and then head to the postbox to post anything that needed posting in good time before last post went.
Before I "finished for the day" I would make sure I was up to date with everything for the day, had completed everything on my "must do" list, made sure that I'd put closing dates for applications onto my calendar, updated my daily work log (just like some jobs expect you to fill out a timesheet or whatever!) and maybe a final check of the jobs boards.
On days I had a job centre appt, that would be treated just like a work appointment - I wouldn't treat it like a day out and go & mooch around the shops after it, I'd go there & back "to work". If I did want to go out during the "working day" I'd work (on my job search) in the evening instead.0 -
The best thing to do when unemployed and looking for work is to continue getting up early in the morning for example at 7am and start browsing the websites and going out of the house to at least do something constructive. It's far too easy to get into the habit of staying in bed for many more hours watching telly or generally doing nothing.:footie:
Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

I apply for about 6 - 7 jobs a day if there is any jobs to apply, I apply for jobs about 40 miles (that's on my JSA Agreement) from me like Manchester, Bury, Bolton ete.
so an hour researching each company you are applying to, and then an hour tailoring your CV to match what they are looking for, thats 14 hours "work". Do that for 3 days a week and you've got your 35 hours.
of course if you just send a generic CV to every company, it will take 30 mins, and will lead to no jobs.0 -
Totally agree with op. Its just getting worse and worse how they are treating jobseekers. Whatever happened to calling it unemployment benefit or the dole.:footie:0

I feel sorry for private companies being bombarded with peoples cvs every day. There isnt a job for everyone, the government should create more jobs not cut them. Bit of a cheek expecting the private sector to service everyone. They really should take a look at themselves. Go out therecand fly the flag for Britain and create more jobs. Other countries do it.:footie:0

With or without the 'dole' we would still be job seekersWe’ve had to remove your signature. Please check the Forum Rules if you’re unsure why it’s been removed and, if still unsure, email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

Spending creates no jobs and or manufacturing in whatever field but they need the orders first to do so.
You can never have full employment and that's a fact. We’ve had to remove your signature. Please check the Forum Rules if you’re unsure why it’s been removed and, if still unsure, email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
