    (And electricians aren't generally engineers.)

That attitude says it all. You're disrespectful of other trades in engineering. No wonder you are having problems.

Electricians still undergo electrical engineering training but because you work in IT you're going to look down your nose at them. Typical. That is the problem in this country, people who work in offices look down their noses at those who deal with tools and hardware.

MPs are always influenced by those in offices who type reports - people like you for instance.

No I'm not, and we employ electronic engineers, mechanical engineers, production engineers, and many more.

However, I stand by my statement that most electricians are not engineers and I dislike the UK habit of using the term where technician, mechanic or installer would be more appropriate.

Not only don't I do that, but I both design and use tools and hardware in my job and I have "tools" as part of my job title!

Yes, I have to write reports too, and I do write to my MP from time to time, but so what?

  • I graduated with a first class honours manufacturing engineering degree from a russell group uni and was top of the year but it was during the last recession. I have worked constantly for the last 20 years in the volunteer sector and have never been unemployed.

You have not been in paid work, you have been living off the state - unless your previous posts are lies?

Earlier you were an IT man. Now you recruit engineers? You're in denial if you ask me.

Software tools aren't really the same thing as physical tools that you hold in your hand.

As I said earlier, you IT types always look down on anything lesser.

I've been right about you from my first reply to you thats what. You even admit to writing to your MP! IT people influencing politicians. It really is no wonder that engineering took a nose dive is it. You IT people always look down on engineers and think they're some lesser sort of life form because they don't work with computers.

Where did I say I was an IT man?

I also design and use physical tools though they do have a high electronic content. However, they hurt if you drop them on your foot, which makes them physical in my book.

It's worse than that, I look down on IT types. :D

Um, I am an engineer! Yes, I work with computers, but also electronics, and I was even doing some soldering this morning.

I'm starting to think that perhaps you don't understand what engineers really do.

Correct, volunteer work is not paid work but I get travel expenses paid. I also qualify for benefits as do the majority of UK households.

My outgoings are low as I have paid off my mortgage and own my home outright.

Ok mate fair enough, perhaps I have got you wrong however your initial post DID make you look like a typical IT type who looked down on anything non-IT.

    Apologies if I've offended you.

We also employ graduate engineers in the US, and there are some salary hotspots, but $100k is decidedly toppy!

My point was more that a) offering more salary attracts better people, and b) in order to get intelligent people to opt for engineering you have to have engineering seen as a good career path, well rewarded and high status. Smart people could be teachers (aiming for head teacher £100k), lawyers, solicitors, doctors, bankers, etc.. I don't believe that engineering in the uk is seen on a par with those jobs. In the USA yes, but not here. Until that changes and it has been like that for 20-30yrs to my knowledge, there will always be a shortage of engineers (as there has been for 20-30yrs on and off).

    No problem, and ditto.

I'm sure I do look down on things from time to time but not other branches of engineering, nor even non-engineering as long as it's done well.

Perhaps not, but this is to a certain extent due to misuse of the word "engineer". One of my Polish employees refused to let a BT technicial into the house because they guy said "BT Engineer" at the door. In Poland, calling yourself an engineer when you aren't is like misusing the title "Doctor".

Maybe my perspective is unusual, but I don't see much different in this regard between US and UK.
