Best Budget Tyres?

Bland score values for tyres are pretty meaningless -- tyre design is a compromise, for example tyres that stick to the road best tend not to last very long and vice versa. Each person has his own views -- and same-model tyres perform differently on various makes of car as well.

We've seen it on here before -- "Michelins last twice as long as budgets" -- OK but then they mention getting 20k out of budgets and 30k out of Michelins. A lot of it is people wanting things to be true -- if we are simply going to look at miles per pound, a £40 tyre that lasts 20k is better than an £80 tyre that lasts 30k. Simple mathematics. You won't be able to persuade some people of that though.
  • Isn't just about how long tyres last though, grip is important to. I would rather spend an extra £100 on tyres if it means i'll keep on the road during rain, snow and ice.

Last car I had £30 budgets on I went around a corner at 40MPH and the car slid and did a 360 turn, I'm lucky no one was coming the other way or they would of hit me side on.

Not buying £30 budgets would be a good start ;)
  • It was a massive, rusty Renault laguna (1995) that I needed to keep for an extra 4 months and it failed its MoT on tyres, so my garage fitted some cheap tyres on it to get it through although 1 blewout when I went over a small pothole at 70mph, put on the spare and a corner with a tiny bit of dirt and the car spun.

Since then I only want decent tyres lol :D
  • One thing that seems to come up in reviews of many budget tyres is their poor unpredictable performance in either adverse weather or on the limits. Obviously we shouldn't be driving to a tyres limits all the time but its nice to know you have some spare when required.

This is one reason I wouldn't generally look at anything below a mid range type of tyre for mine or my wife's car

    Where's that head-banging smiley.

That was an *example*. I don't only look at how long tyres last, as anyone on here will tell you.

Merely highlighting the irrational approach some people use when deciding what stuff to buy.
