Just quit Sky. What next ?

Paying £67.25 a month for full Sky World package. Recently had a go on Netflix round a family members house and was impressed. Have now gone on free trial of Netflix running it through my Xbox360 onto main TV. Now looking at a Freesat Recordable box to try to replicate as much of the sky functionality as possible. I love my HD content and it looks like there is more available elsewhere now not just from Sky.
Any suggestions of a good box to replace? Will Sky come back with any offers( he offered 20% off which i declined) ? Any other tips to help wean us off Sky which we have had for nearly 10 years ! Love all the aspects of Sky ie 3d,HD,Films,Sport, funtionality of Sky +, Sky 1 programs etc. Looks like most things can be had through Netflix,Lovefilm Freesat etc but i will miss Sky 1(Sky Living for the wife) and my beloved footy. In saying that ill be about 50 quid better off every month to go down the boozer to watch it with my lad :p

I think most people would recommend Humax. We have had two other brands, but the Humax ones have well outlasted them.(One is 5 years old)

Now TV is doing some Sky channels for £5 a month (http://www.nowtv.com/entertainment)

The Sky Sports Day Pass at £10 a day is a tad expensive though

Peter Kay once joked that Sky was right up there with running water as priority in his house.

Sky plus tends to be thing you really miss in my experiance. Not being able to pause live TV and one button record is hard to go back to. But a new freeview box will do all of this.

if you would go back to sky for around 50% off then hold fire as an offer may appear. the money you save in the meantime will pay for the new freeview box should an offer not appear.

In the mean time this is a great chance to "power view" a good TV series on Love film or Netflix.

May I suggest the one my user name and Avatar comes from.:A

At a few episodes a night it will still take 3-4 weeks.

You could buy a motorised satellite system, I've had one for about 12 years. I get all the free HD channels on SKY(Astra 28.2), there's footy too. Many times I've watched premier league games that are being shown live for free on other European networks with English commentary.

Plus you can buy a euro viewing card(legal for personal use) for a fraction of what S*y take from your pocket each month if you really want your footy fix.;)

Humax <freetime> box is great, including very clever on-demand stuff.
If you don't want the on-demand stuff, you can get a Humax Foxsat HDR. This does do on-demand, but not as nicely integrated.
  • Well had a call back today first of all offering 35% off plus hd for £47 a month then after saying still too much offered 50% off plus hd totalling £38.75 per month for 12 months with no commitment being able to cancel at any time giving 31 days notice. What do you reckon ? is is worth holding out further or is this as good as I'm going to get ?

    Just cancelled Sky ourselves.

Going Youview with TalkTalk; might be worth a look for you?

You get a recordable youview box with pause and record etc. Just Freeview channels with catchup channels (iplayer, itv player etc).

But with the option to get other channels from TalkTalk if you find the cull to excessive.

Anyway we are awaiting the transfer so I cannot give a full details of whether we will miss Sky or not?

Going to save well over £400 a year though compared to what we were paying. This is for a pack that includes broadband, TV, line rental and all call charges.
